its really a waste of time to speculate what Deadmau5 is like if you dont know him.

But the tracklist is still atrocious. Tacky isnt even the word.

The Danny Howells Essential mix that dropped in Feb 07 was one of the most well thoughout and programmed sets I've ever heard. Its legendary amonst house heads. That sets the bar pretty high. Label/Arsist whoring is a kick in the face to everyone who's made an outstanding Essential mix up to this point.

My impression is that Deadmau5 doesn't take any of this very seriously, so he likes poking fun at people who treat dance tracks or DJ sets as anything more than trivial doof-doof-doof music churned out to excite a crowd and then be forgotten within a few months.

I don't think he has a big ego. He just enjoys shitting on people who think of EDM as art or serious music rather than simple stupid fun.

pretty much. i can't say as i particularly approve of what he's doing, but at the same time i can pull back to reality and see things from his point of view (which is if he's having fun and doing what he loves then why should he give a flying fuck what others think), and in truth find some of the criticism on here a little OTT and cringeworthy; i'd probably be laughing it off if i were him. i mean fair enough it was a weak effort for an EM but it's not like he's desecrated some form of holy ground

as for 'shitting on people who think of EDM as art of serious music'.. well, lets be honest, they're an easy crowd to target. trance-heads have gotten plenty of stick on here for finding too much 'serious' in their music, or claiming it touches their soul in some superficial kind of way.. really this is no different. music enthusiasts often come off as nerds, and nerds are fun to belittle.

the problem here is enthusiasts not being open to other people's perception of their passion. i mean i don't personally like it when people write off my favourite tunes as trashy when they hold personal meaning to me.. but i don't cry about it, as i accept different people look for different things in music. likewise, people shouldn't cry when someone like deadmau5 obviously doesn't take EDM all that seriously.

To be fair, the words "Danny Howells" still crop up often enough for me to known immediately who it's by. I'm not accusing the man of Deadmau5's crimes by any means, but I'll wager it's pretty rare to find an EM these days without some self-promotion, especially if it's by someone who hasn't been on before. Deadmau5's set is really the logical conclusion of what the EM is now about.

And I know it's not exactly comparable, but The Future Sound of London did an EM of almost entirely their own material as far back as 1994.

Sure...its logical to do some kind of expose of your own works when you're gonna mix what will possibly be the most heard set you ever play.

I agree, the Howells was the ultimate EM. Such a beautiful and well thought out mix.Still listen to it frequently.
