so weird you say that as I thought the opposite when watching the video... well not that he has a german accent but it fully sounds (to me) like he has been speaking english with germans for the last 5 years lol

He may make good music for a select group of people, but he cannot be rated as number 1 dj. His style is unique, and many people associate techno with his name. However, I find that his style is a bit boring. I have seen him a few times, and when I looked at the crowd, I noticed that not many people were really into his music. I even heard a crowd chant "Boring" during his performance. He may work well playing at 5 am for the people that are still awake for various reasons, but may not be able to pump up consistently the crowds while they are still coherent. Sorry this may be a bit of a sarcastic comment, but I hope many of you know what I mean.
All I can say is that he makes good music for a certain sound following group, but cannot be rated as a great dj.

Agreed. It's why I've always loved it.

Why do people in this scene feel the need to attribute a ranking system to their musicians?

hahaha, this should happen more often! not talking about with Hawtin specifically, but any DJ who is just boring the shit out of a crowd, especially when its after midnight!

Rene Amesz @ FW like a month ago definitely would have been an appropriate time for a good 'boring' chant!

Yeah this is a good point, every DJ is different, why do we have to consider one better than another? plus, its all a matter of personal preference anyways, its not like there is a set of evaluation criteria where you can give of the a report card to judge their performance as a DJ.

Hawtin can be doing all these fancy things with his computer programs and electronic devices but if he isnt playing sets that people enjoy hearing, how can he be considered the Best DJ? Not saying this is the case, I am just saying the fact that he is technologically advanced doesnt automatically make him the best DJ.

Plus there are so many different sub-genres of EDM, how can you say the best Trance DJ is the Best DJ in the world for all genres, for example....

Conclusion: There is no #1 DJ! Lots of different DJs have unique characteristics to offer!

But without a ranking system how do I know what society tells me is good?
