I believe that the right permits should be given to people for example, farmers, in handling certain types of hunting weapons, shotguns or rifles.

I just don't see the point in having a gun that you mow down an entire classroom without having to reload. They're not normally used in a hunting situation. (Like that massive shotgun thing up there).

yeah, you need to have the permit. theres about one and a half million shotguns in the UK and that's for people who own farms or lots of land as far as i know, or if you work as a gamekeeper or something of the sort.

That's just a regular 6-8 round pump shotgun with storage space for extra ammo.

To own a gun here, you need to be either a cop, in private security, in the armed forces, or a livestock farmer. That's it, as far as I'm aware.

but if you aim at a bird or deer and you miss, it tends to get away, in some cases you can fire a second time and get lucky.

Theres not much skill or sense of satisfaction by pumping god knows how many rounds into the air with that thing and hopefully clipping something.

That shotgun isn't for hunting game, its for shooting any dipshit who decides its a good idea to break into my house. I'm a law abiding citizen, I'm not going to be mowing down any classrooms full of kids so why shouldn't I be able to own those weapons. In fact, if someone did decide they were going to forcefully enter my neighbor's house I'd be more than able to assist them if they were unarmed. Unless you decide that you want to enter my home and threaten me or my family you would never have the business end of one of those weapons aimed at you.

Laws restricting me from owning "a gun that you mow down an entire classroom" with wouldn't even prevent such a crime. I have had multiple opportunities to purchase more powerful weapons than I have illegally, I just chose not to. In fact, a few years ago I could have purchased a fully automatic belt fed weapon illegally from a guy, all he wanted was $1,000 no questions asked. That weapon is extreamly restricted here in the US and I could have bought it easier than my shotgun. Shit, I at least had to sign papers for that. Gun laws don't protect you, all they do is prevent people who aren't going to break the law anyway from owning a gun. If I was planning to break the law and mow down a classroom I certainly wouldn't have any problem violating a firearms law that restricted me from purchasing a particular type of weapon now would I?

the fact that you think that your family is safer by having a deadly weapon in the home is so backwards. isn't that obvious to you?

Why is this such an alien concept to you? From the spear in the cave to the modern firearm in the home, man has always had tools to protect themselves and their property from others. Have you ever heard the saying "If you outlaw guns only outlaws will have guns." ?

im not an expert in QLD law, but i would hazard a guess that this isnt quite true. you need to show that you have a valid reason for owning/operating a firearm, but that valid reason might be for things like recreational shooting. ive been shooting with friends who have valid licenses and they are none of the above.

Turns out you're right. Just found these points on the police website:

1 Persons wishing to possess or use a weapon must have a licence (there are some exceptions).
2 A licence may be issued to an individual or a body.
3 You must have a genuine reason to own a weapon - this includes being a member of a shooting club, being a recreational shooter, being a collector or having an occupational requirement.
4 Persons applying for a licence or for a licence of another category of weapon (except in special circumstances) are required to complete a weapons safety course.
5 You must have secure storage for your weapons.
6 Weapons must be registered to a licence. Depending on the licence type, there maybe restrictions on the number of weapons you can own (i.e. under collector heirloom licence and the first year of a concealable sports/target shooters licence).
7 You may also have to provide proof of need that supports your reason to acquire a firearm during the Permit to Acquire process. Registering new weapons to your licence will usually incur a one-off fee for each firearm.
8 Some weapons are restricted and must be handed in or made permanently inoperable.
