Me and my bro have to get to Ontario in august, we are thinking of just going to NY stay with our aunt for a bit then take a train. Would that be cheaper then flying direct? |
Maybe, but I always take into account the cost of the inconvenience. Would I take a 2hr train ride to save $200 on airfare? No.
Would I take a 2hr train ride to save $2000 on airfare. Sure.

If you're on a plane and you touch the seat - your hands are dirty. |
Next time you get a hot towel on the plane don't wipe your face with it, wipe the headrest, especially if it is leather. You'll probably want to vomit. Since I showed my wife the brown hot towel on one flight she now has to look away whenever the FA comes round to hand them out.

haha! no, it's seriously not the most ideal way to travel but for the price and basically not having to do any of the work of figuring out where you're going or what you're doing, it's a pretty neat experience. we went to Greece a few years back on one of those tours, and even though i was stuck traveling around with a bunch of ignorant and whiny overweight Americans, it was still a really amazing trip... and being there with my mom made it even better.
to be honest i just want to go for the food. |
Maybe it is just me but half the fun of going on holiday is the planning. Figuring out the cities, what to see, what not, where to stay, how to get around, how long to spend in each place. If you are on a tour schedule you're just in a little bubble.
A couple of year my wife and I went on a Hawaiian cruise. I loved the islands but hated the cruise because your time was driven around when the boat was in dock, when it left, meal times etc. etc. The boat was a good way to get around the islands but it left a lot to be desired IMO. That was the only holiday where we haven't planned and booked everything ourselves. Last year we did a round the world trip across 3 months; booked the airline tickets ourselves, did the research on the hotels and the cities and it was incredible. We felt we accomplished and did something unique because it was our holiday and odds are nobody else has done that same itinerary.
Tours are probably good for the inexperienced traveller who is afraid to get 'their hands dirty' but for me that's part and parcel of the experience.

The infamous Rojam ID. 14 years, 9 months and counting...
