Where do you draw the line between animal and plant? Why is eating an animal 'bad', but eating a plant 'good'?

And if you (vegans) believe meat-eating is bad purely on the basis of animal treatment, do you drink milk or use any sort of dairy product? A vegan who is a vegan on the basis of animal treatment would not be able to touch roughly 99% of the food and liquids available on the current market.
