I'm not sure that's true... you contended earlier that no one gets hurt from a crackhead doing crack in their own house; however, a whole bunch of gang related murder victims would beg to differ with you... as would hookers, johns' wives with communicable diseases, orphaned children, property owners with depressed property values owing to proximity to crack houses, innocent bystanders, etc. Generally, when something is made illegal there is good cause for it, even if you don't see it on the surface. Granted, that isn't the case for everything; however, there are things that need to be considered intolerable and if the general concensus is that something is intolerable then it should be controled or outright prohibited. The most important thing for any society to function to the benefit of the greatest number of it's members is order. For order to be maintained there must be a certain standard of behaviour maintained... generally, things are not tolerated when they violate that standard; if we were to simply tolerate everything that is not on the surface harmful we would likely see that order we need errode with great haste. |
hmm well i would argue that the reason there are gang-related crimes associated with the drug trade is precisely because it is illegal. if drugs were legalized, they would no longer be pushed into the black market, where violence is rampant and regulation is impossible. i could talk about drug policy all day, but i'm sure no one wants to hear that so if you are interested we can facebook debate it
also, if prostitution were legal, there would be restrictions, similar to pornography, that mandate std testing. that's how it is in germany and amsterdam.
i think the reason some of these things remain so taboo is because of the problems that arise as a direct result of them being illegal.
