perhaps these stats will help you guys, - even though i still don't believe that women's lower income level has anything to do with the topic of the thread. but go on ...here are the facts as collected by Canadian Stats:

"...on average, women still earn less than men. The hourly wage paid to women in 2001 was only 82% of that paid to men. This earnings gap widens even further with average annual earnings: women working full time, full year in 2001, for example, pulled in only 72% of what their male counterparts did."

"WOMEN'S EARNINGS REMAIN SUBSTANTIALLY BELOW MEN'S
In 1998, earnings of employed women in Canada averaged $22,000, 64% of men's average earnings for the same year ($34,200).
Part of the reason for women's lower earnings is that they are much more likely than men to work part time. However, even when only full-time, full-year employees are considered, the wage gap persists. In 1998, women in full-time, full-year positions earned an average of $32,600, 72% of the average of $45,100 earned by their male counterparts.

I feel one needn't worry about etiquette as a general rule, because everyone is different.
As a woman, it is nice to be treated from a guy that I really like. I feel I can't accept a person paying if the date went nowhere.
I also love to treat, I love to make my guy feel great as well, and in all three long term relationships I've had, this has been a reciprocal sentiment.
In university we were so poor we couldn't afford dinners; a lavish treat would be getting souvlakis at Arahova.
What I appreciate, to this day is that we don't keep track, we share everything- and I apply the same code of ethics with dear friends. And we treat each other in any order we please.
I realise first dates are different, and I always prepare to pay, because I feel it is wrong to assume the other person will pick up the tab. But I won't put up a fuss if they want to pick it up; some guys really like to treat, and that's okay too. I believe that ultimately, everyone feels differently about this topic; it doesn't mean one is worse than the other, we all have varying sentiments that should be respected
That's what I think.

you can't take average income to indicate that women are earning less. you have to take men and women on the same job, same qualifications etc.
I've looked for this a little bit and this is the bext I could find, taking most of those factors into account:
http://www.ncpa.org/pub/ba/ba392/ba392.pdf
I'm not sure its the best data or will resolve any arguments on here but if it can help even a little its a bonus
