I have no need for this - Google stole my heart a long time ago.

Google Inc. and its partner EarthLink were chosen by San Francisco Wednesday to blanket the city with affordable wireless Internet access, beating out five other bidders for a chance at the highly coveted contract.

San Francisco will start negotiating a deal with the two companies, following a recommendation by a city panel evaluating the project.

The decision by San Francisco brings the prospect of free wireless Internet access for residents one step closer to reality. If completed, virtually everyone within the city limits will be able to get online -- provided they have a compatible computer -- whether at home, in a park or at work.

"I am still hopeful, and maybe I'm a cockeyed optimist, that we can finish this year," said Chris Vein, executive director of San Francisco's technology department.

In choosing to negotiate with the Google-EarthLink team, the city is going with two Internet giants with household names. Both firms have deep pockets and proven track records online, but only limited experience building a large wireless network.

The project, championed by Mayor Gavin Newsom, is intended to boost the city's technology credentials and help bridge the digital divide between the Internet haves and have-nots. It has also generated intense interest from other cities looking to build similar networks.

Chronicle staff writer Rachel Gordon contributed to this report.

I just saw that you can import your calendar from outlook, which is very helpful, but i wish you could sync too.

i guess that will be different feature to add.

Meh, I like Rainlndar more because I can stick that thing on my desktop. If Google could import from Rainlendar, then we'd be talking, although I'd still only use GoogleCalendar as a backup.

Google Audio calls for talent
Posted by Garett Rogers @ 9:16 pm

While browsing through the jobs at Google I stumbled across something new — postings targeted at future "Google Audio" employees. Some of the positions they are looking to fill are: Customer Support Technician, Senior Sales Technical Support, Provisioning Manager, Media Account Manager, Business Analyst, Account Executive.

What could "Google Audio" be though? Maybe it will be the music search/store offering that has been heavily speculated about recently. In a move that could add some truth to these rumors, Google held a meeting that only top music industry executives were invited to attend on March 30th. Google Audio could very well be the product name for this future service.

It could also be the name for an audio version of AdWords. It's not a matter of if Google will launch this service, but when — they already own the technology through the recent acquisition of dMarc Broadcasting. It will be interesting to see how successful radio advertising will be considering the slow response to Google's Publication Ads experiment.

Cool Google Calendar is great.

I LOVE GOOGLE CALENDAR!

I use it ALL THE TIME now!

It's wonderful!

I know many of the other online calendars were and are still phenomenal... and even better in terms of ease of use, etc...

But its the close integration and association to Gmail that makes this so fucking handy beyond belief for me!

Just so easy to add things to it from your email and to switch to it!
I like the Agenda feature, and the custom date period (mine's set to 3 weeks). I'm using this like I wouldn't believe!

No longer even keeping my Outlook up to date. Google Calendar for the future for me.

I cant wait till they set up Holidays to appear on it. I'd also love to see them make it so that when you click on a calendar event/appointment, it'll show more than just the name, and location and the "more details" link. Having it eventually displaying any notes you have entered when you click on the event would be ^5 (avoiding having to click on "more details" first to see what notes you've made).

So much potential IMO. I love it. That's my verdict.

Jem
