Santana, You were cool
Let me rephrase that - You were awesome. Whatta night! Thanks.
I was tempted to say that probably my post on being disappointment the last time around had something to do with you not playing any breakbeat stuff this time around, but then that would be taking too much credit for nothing. I saw a Santana who seems well set for the higher leagues. Good luck .
mrmorden and mdamon7278 have put a good summary of what's not right with Amps these days. The guy with the mic who doesn't seem to realize that no one goes to that club to listen to his half-assed humor and relentless shit is the least of the club's problems. It seems the club is caught in a dilemma about what it's target audience is, as is reflected in the gradual change of music-genre being played by resident DJs on saturday nights. In past it was a healthy mix of techno/trance/breakbeats with a sprinkling of hip-hop in between. Now, on a regular saturdays, it is mostly breakbeats with a sprinkling of trance with .
For some reason, Mondo is losing it big time. I had to say losing because he, in my opinion, is one of the better DJs and i have seen him set the house on fire in past. But that past now goes back more than an year - in past year or so, he is steadily declining on his 'choice of music' and mix skills.
I had a brief exchange of messages with 93.3 FLZ Saturday Night house party host Brian Fink and while he's not too sure, it seems Mondo may be under some pressure from the club management to play more "mainstream" (read hip-hop/breakbeat) music. Maybe an effort to pull in more "mainstream" crowd. In the process, Amps has lost it's regular visitors. Some have seeked alternatives elsewhere, the others have just given up on clubbing. Sad that it should happen with Amps and i only hope someone in the management wakes up or Santoro takes a stock of the things.
On a side note, Mondo seems to play awful tracks between 12:00 - 1:00 on a regular basis and i don't know why but i get the feeling that he is trying to cater to the "mainstream" crowd during that time. Maybe it's a club policy or something.
Hope the club survives. It's the only one that can even remotely cater to the techno/trance crowd around Tampa.
