You now have a large amount of Muslims who think the West is slandering and insulting their religion and a man in Iran who is potentially seeking an "ultimate" retaliation weapon. If there's one thing the Muslim community in the Middle East does well, it's beating themselves into a frenzy and then looking for a "leader" to take out their frustrations. I really hope the scenario I'm envisioning doesn't come to pass.

It's really dreadful. The election victory of Hamas and the Egyptian ferry catastrophe has also added to what looks to become something grim. However, although it looks suspiciously like a joint effort by Middle Eastern countries to start WW3, a few inconsistencies suggests that this might not be true. For instance, almost all Arab countries are mainly targetting Denmark with their wrath, whereas Iran has kept to some kind of consistent madness: They've so far taken the same actions against all countries whose papers have printed the cartoons. Furthermore, some Arabs are desperate to pull the Jews into the equation, with their insistence that Denmark has laws against denying the Holocaust, and others go solely for the West. One can hope.

I just read that the Egyptian foreign minister had *demanded* that Denmark should get tougher on its press. That's effectively dictating the laws of another country, and it sickens me to my gut. I know that the Egyptian government have internal problems to deal with, but these kinds of remarks borderlines declaration of war. The same goes with torching embassies, as these are officially on foreign soil.
As a new development, Iraq's ministry of transportation has just announced that it'll freeze all contracts with Danish companies. If this is a signal that Danes are unwanted in Iraq by the Iraqi government, I guess we can withdraw our troops.

And finally, it seems like the US and UK media are starting to treat this matter as more than yet another boy-with-two-heads-born-by-local-woman story. Some of todays editorials throw around big words such as appeasement, fear, Voltaire, and cowardice.

However, I can comment on how things looks in Denmark, and here it won't be forgotten next week. People have pretty much lost all kind of sympathy with Middle Easterners, and I don't think any Danish government will try to help out with diplomacy down there in the coming decades. Denmark has been relentless in its support of the Palestinian cause, and have worked for making the EU act as a mediator between the Middle East and the US. That is going to stop, and I think that most Danes would sit back and watch if Israel resumed its persecutions of Arabs. It is easy to detect this shift in attitude when you talk to people in Denmark, and follow the public debate. Most of my friends and colleagues are left wingers, but they have suddenly turned very anti-Islamists. There's a media outlets which have been so deeply aligned with the left that their reflex reaction to the initial publication of the drawings back in September was a clear condemnation. Today these papers and networks stands confused, unable to see how to maintain their stance. The most vocal paper (Politiken) has even said that "if things turns to deadly violence, you will see the cartoons on our front page". Jyllands-posten, in an unusually emotionally ladden editorial accused them of hypocracy and asked if assaults, death threats, and torchings were to weak indicators of something being amiss. Our second largest paper, Berlingeren, who also was condemning the cartoons at first, has pretty much acknowledged that it doesn't dare reprint the cartoons. They can see how Jyllands-posten has been driven to the ground, and that the editors and their families lives in fear of retribution, and has decided that they do not wish to share that fate.
Furthermore, I think Danes are beginning to realize that democracy and freedom of speech are our "religion", and that no-one will defend it for us. The following email was sent to a "Buy Danish"-flagging blog by a Dane:

While the sender of this email has clearly misunderstood the point about joining the coalition of the willing in order to build up good will, he does pretty much represent how Danes feel about the official US and UK and the UN at this time. I would say that the EU should be added to the list of institutions failing the Danes in order to score cheap points/avoid a conflict. The fight for keeping our society as we want it will probably be one of our own, and I guess we're getting to grips with that now.
That being said, the head of NATO did show unequivocal support for Scandinavians and freedom of speech today. Of course its way to late.

I totally sympathise with your plight, I have nothing but love for denmark, its footballers, some ta members from there, and the beautiful pork products you produce, we should be sticking by you, as we'd expect you to for us. Sadly there's way too many extremeists who can get into the uk so easily, meaning nobody in power will come out in support in fear.

Looks like the Muslims couldn't help keep us Jews out of it:

I like how the official Israel response is "Don't you dare bring us into this!"

However, ADL has a very nicely articulate response on this whole issue.

Also, its very sad how some in our west are apologetic and conspiratorial about this issue: http://mathaba.net/0_index.shtml?x=508448

Looks like some people will just never get it

Unfortunately, the way I see that is that these countries were just looking for an excuse. They had to have some sort of "spark" in order to get things rolling in a (at least for them) justifyable manner.

Now we have a couple of things:

1 - A Western country, with all its "freedoms" printing cartoons (of all things) that, with the help of sharp words by Islamic leaders, has been construed as a Western attack on Islam.

2 - A strong, Muslim controlled nation (Iran) that is now "sticking up" for itself against the evil West, as it feels it is trying to follow its own destiny. Which again has been craftfully manipulated to appear as a Western attack on the region by sympathizers in the area.

3 - The beginning of more moderate Middle East states (such as Egypt) to demand conditions of Western countries in order to appease their own Islamic populations.

I'm waiting for whatever step 4 is going to be.
