It's all about motivation
It's all about motivation. In 2002, France and Portugal got knocked out because they thought they could roll into the round of 16 with ease. There is no easy win in the World Cup anymore. Teams from Africa, Asia and Americas (excluding the South America) used to be the sure way to ensure 3 points, but those days are long gone.
Some of you guys say how the refs were bribed and all. If you have the teams to reach the round of 4, you better beat the teams like Korea with convincing manner, regardless. The only team on this planet that can ease into the final year in and year out is Brazil in my opinion, and they do get knocked out time to time.
The Koreans had their advantage. They did not have players in the big leagues and ended the Korean league early that year and trained the shit out of the national team. They were fresh compared to the rest of the world coming off from a long season. Koreans don't have that kind of advantage this year, and it would be very interesting to see how they fair this year.
The main question is for the managers. How are you going to motivate the boys. There are lots of hungry talents from unknown countries who want to prove to the scouters that they belong in the big leagues. It's really hard to motivate players with million dollar contracts. Look at the US Basketball team! The survivor of this group will be the teams that attack the pitch with the urgency. That's why you can't count the Togo and Korea out of this tournament just yet! I can't wait to see which teams will advance!!!
