My speculation though is that the first tasering was justified.

Afterall, if I was that police officer, I would be slightly scared. We have this innocent looking kid that is simply going crazy, shouting at the top of his lungs in a library for no real reason. Its not the behavior of a rational individual, and I would be suspicious, try and neutralize the situation as quick as possible, and get the kid out of there before he starts a riot, pulls out a knife, jumps out the window, or who knows what.

Its very easy to look at this from the perspective of the students or yourself in your situation, but cops deal with a lot of shit on a daily basis as well and fear for there lives at many occurances. While us at the safety of our armchairs can see how this kid didn't pose any threat or most likely wouldn't, the cops at the ground don't get to make that call, they have to assume the worst, or it is there lives, jobs or worse on the line (of course making a bad call also puts your job on the line obviously).

Just wanted to point out that this is a college campus, not the streets of Compton. Also, according to a letter to the editor in the Daily Bruin, in order to use the computers in that library, you need a special pass that, assumedly, is only given to students and other campus-affiliated persons (professors, etc.).

UCPD needs to better serve its community

While I do agree with David Lazar ("Beware of easy knee-jerk reactions," Nov. 17) that Mostafa Tabatabainejad was uncooperative and even hostile, an unarmed civilian refusing to leave a library hardly justifies use of force.

It is true that police officers face danger and we respect them for their sacrifice.

On the other hand, we're talking about the CLICC Lab.

It is brightly lit, public and no one can even use a computer without a proper BOL account. It is not exactly the hardened street corner Lazar makes it out to be.

University police need to be able to diffuse hostile situations such as these without the use of force. Their biggest problem is not one of ethics. It is a public relations issue.

The campus police's authority is only as strong as the community's commitment to it.

UCPD needs to make it clear that it will protect and serve in the most dignified manner befitting the community it services.

My point was exactly that: because it is in such a 'tranquil' setting the suspect's irrational behavior is all that more cause for concern.

But none of us know if it was irrational, because the tape didn't start rolling until after a scene was already being made.

I'll concede that.

It just appears so to me.

"In that case, get the fuck out."

"Alright mofo, go fuck yourself. I'm not going to participate in my own profiling. I'm leaving."

some white prick gets scared of an Arab looking dude refusing to show his ID. Cops come in when the dudes headed out.

"Let me go."

"Fuck you, we're going to tase you."

It's that fucking simple. You want me to break it down any simpler?

Pure genius!!!

While a valid point, the student did indicate his shouting was to get the attention of others, possibily to for support. but it didn't turn out like that. Oh, and he is a 4yr student of UCLA, so its not like he was tresspassing.

Ummm, this officer's reputation seemingly preceeds him:

quote:
In May 1990, he was accused of using his nightstick to choke someone who was hanging out on a Saturday in front of a UCLA fraternity. Kente S. Scott alleged that Duren confronted him while he was walking on the street outside the Theta Xi fraternity house.

Scott sued the university, and according to court records, UCLA officials moved to have Duren dismissed from the police force. But after an independent administrative hearing, officials overturned the dismissal, suspending him for 90 days.

http://www.latimes.com/news/local/l...ines-california

It gets worse:

quote:
According to one court complaint presented in the trial, Duren allegedly woke a student sleeping in the study hall in Kerckhoff in August 1993, escorted him outside, slammed him against a wall, and handcuffed and arrested him.

The complaint also stated that on the way to the police station, Duren told the student, "For a while there I thought I was going to have to 'Rodney King' you."

http://dailybruin.com/news/articles.asp?id=39047

Keep in mind this is in addition to shooting a homeless man in a bathroom.

I was willing to try and give this officer as much of a benefit of doubt as I possibly could for his actions prior to the multiple tases (to which I've said I find the officer completely at fault for beyond that initial tase). Now that I see this gent has a rather checkered past, it's becoming obvious that a pattern has developed. No more excuses for this officer anymore. This ain't lookin' good for him at all.

Thank you! Atleast someone has their head screwed on right. What was pising me off was people assuming the kid HAD to be at fault. And then claiming that "he had it coming"? Like what, 4 extra tases while he was handcuffed?
