Don't know if anyone has seen this yet, but the BMW fan appreciation day was saturday out at Nurburg. They let Heidfeld out onto the Nordschleife in his F1.07 which is the first time an F1 car has been on that part of the track since the GP in 1976 when Niki Lauda wrecked and got torched really bad.

yeah, Heidfeld's fastest lap was an 8:34ish
not particularly fast (record is 6:28 from memory - Porsche 956, some road cars do sub 8's) but then he would have been easing it around carefully - and understandably so.
Dunno how well the car would have liked some of the bumps too.........
I hate these mid-season breaks
testing news
quote:
It was all eyes on McLaren at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya on Monday morning, as the championship leaders began testing with a radical new front wing design. If successful, it could make its race debut at next month’s Spanish Grand Prix.
Several teams have already been running additional planes on their front wings this season, connecting the wing’s endplates to the nosecone. McLaren have taken this one step further, with a single additional plane spanning right across the top of the nose from one endplate to the other.
The wing is proof of just how hard McLaren are pushing with the development of the MP4-22, which has already notched up one win and a further four podiums this season in the hands of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton.
With an unprecedented four-week break between the Bahrain and Spanish rounds, McLaren have taken full advantage of the extra time to work on new parts back at their UK factory. The Mercedes-powered team were also busy carrying out straight-line aerodynamic testing in Menorca last week.

You can see at one point he lays off pretty good to get a sweet fly-by shot for the cam car. They probably had the suspension as soft as possible, and the ride height all the way up to keep from bottoming out over some of the areas cars normally jump. He also started on the GP circuit, did most of a full lap, and then went out on the Nordschleife.
Kind of makes you wonder what a contemporary F1 car could do time wise if allowed to go all out. The fastest times in 75 were around 7 minutes with the best breaking 7 set by Niki Lauda who managed something like 6:58. It's kind of ironic as he wanted all the drivers to boycott the race in 76 due to safety concerns, and they didn't listen until he turned into the human torch.

His car only went so fast because he ran out of gearing on the back straight. Also, they pussied out and set his car high & soft. Con't really balme them for a demonstration run though.
The Radical SR3 ProSport currently holds the record I think...something around 6:30.
in a couple months, I'll have my own time around the ring to post for you bitches
