it was kerosene actually, which provided more heat per unit than gas. utilizing steam power is a very efficient way of conserving energy. With today's technology it will be interesting to see how these cars perform.

and how often would people need to refill their heavy water tanks if the cars were to go above 20 mph?

A lot of people say that about the GTO and GTR's, fact is there's a number of different driving techniques to use when you're in an all wheel drive, all wheel steering car that people tend to forget about. Much different to either a RWD or FWD car in terms of maintaining traction and cornering, then throw in AWS and you've got something which literally feels like it's losing traction going through corners as the back wheels steer on top of the sometimes unique handling characteristics of AWD.

Celica GT4

I think these little beasts as a mass-produced car where one of the best looking around. Wasn't so taken with the model that came after which didn't have the pop up headlights, they're a good car too but just didn't quite work for me.
Looking back on it, was the most 'fun' car I ever owned, (the rims are kind of yucky on that one in the picture), I'd own one again but they're getting long in the tooth and been owned by at least a dozen people even more suicidal than me, before I'd get my hands on one again... so it's kind of a liability.

my dad had a friend that invited him to a 'open' BMW gymkhana on a frozen lake west of where i live. he said it was great autocrossing on ice, and the celica stomped all of the bmw's, but the main issue was the turbo. you had to NOT use it as mid turn all four wheels would start roostertailing fountains of ice.

thats sweet.

in terms of 'steam power' why doesnt someone post a link of how this is actually being developed into a future product?

theoretically youd never have to refill the tank. but we are talking about CARS. you would have to at some point. and almost all cars need to go 70-90 mph to be viable.

so why steam?|

No you would never have to fill the tank of WATER, the power source to heat the steam (ie gas, wood, whatever), is what you would have to replenish. The power comes from the whole cycle of steam heating and then cooling. Either way there is no 100% efficient steam engine, even in the ideal world. The most efficent engine is the Carnot engine (still talking about steam). Even then that is not anywhere close to 100% efficiency.

Using a fuel which is not 100% efficient then going to a steam engine which won't be 100% efficient is not good at all.

Summary
Steam power will never be good because you have to heat it somehow. It's like adding a middleman, why use gas to heat steam rather than using the gas itself?

okay, i understand.

that is mostly what i meant when i first asked for the 'why of steam' question before the water tank. my point was that, YES current tech could make a *better* steam engine, but how would that be as powerful while being more efficient when no one has pursued the tech in nearly 100 years in autos.

mostly it was cause Omega_M said the car ran on water, which isnt entirely true.

also, if there was a production steam engine, i think eventually you might have to replace the water, even if not often (due to buildup, corrosion, etc)|
