Saw him play that live, he actually played it twice in the same set almost as if to say "come on this is why you love me".

His whole set was pretty lifeless, the people at that particular club have come to expect a lot more from DJs and I think everyone there found it a pretty pointless experience. Everyone I have spoken to has said just about the same thing, DJs and clubbers alike.

'For an Angel' is a classic though but you would think that any DJ with a bit of sense and his ability would have made a real stonker or a remix to finish the set with, not a fluffy breaks version. At least that's how I would have done it, but I guess that's why he is where he is and I'm where I am he he.

An interesting factor is that you have DJs sort of split into two groups.

On the one side you have people who are constantly producing and coming up with the goods on a regular basis e.g. Ferry, Armin (Love him or hate him), Above and Beyond etc.

On the other you have the likes of PvD, ATB and dare I say it even Darude. All of which have written some of the largest anthems the industry has ever seen but sadly only managed to do it the once or twice. That's not to say that they haven't written good songs after that but not to that level.
It must be hard as hell though and you have to be both lucky and smart to hit the right mood at the right time in an industry, as for the most part the vast majority only ever get to release stuff on indie labels and can only dream about that level of success so fair play to all of them either way. Also the industry isn't what it was and doesn't have the same level of mass appeal anymore.

You would think after all these years at least that PvD at least would have lost some of his shyness and let rip a bit more on the decks.

I would also happilly change places with any of them with the exceptions of Peter Hook. Couldn't do that to myself in any universe.

You're absoltely right about about Dj's relying on their previous sucesses but this is really true of many musicians, not just DJ'S.
There are so many bands out there making a living out of the 1 or 2 hits they had 10, 20 years ago, (i.e by playing the pub circuit) but what it seems they don't realise is that in the long run it destroys the credibitlty of the artists and eventually makes people sick of that song.

This thread highlighted a prime example of someone living off their previous glory, but the names you mention are also becoming guilty of similar (but in fairness to a much lesser extent) existance.

I do think it's incredibly difficult to have the same level of sucess again when you write a "classic" - maybe you got lucky - maybe you are in tune with what's going on in the scene or what is about to be the next big thing - maybe you collaborated with a group of people where a certain dynamic was created and that dynamic happened to fit with the period to create something incredible - the problem is that there are so many fragile variables can affect this.

I have always felt that PVD played the most programmed sets I had ever witnessed - and many times it has been simply incredible, and again if your in tune with what people want you can in effect lead them or tell them what is good without having to really react to what they want (or think htey want). The problem comes when people are bored or want something different and you don't or can't adapt becuase of the preprogrammed nature.

I personally can't beleive he's still playing for an angel during sets - it could be okay if it had not ben heard for a couple of years but PVD hasn't given it a rest. it's basically been in his sets for nearly 10 years now and giving it a breakbeat does nothing more than make a less dancy version of it.
