i would say there generally there is a dirth of somewhat cookie cutter tech house out there, and to be honest, its really easy to spin "adequately" with that kind of stuff.

the problem is that a lot of djs don't take risks, musically or really technically, and with techy shit, that can often equate to boring as all hell. take more riks, try pulling off something totally unexpected... but that would require imagination and skills to pull it off.

i like all kinds of music and try to get out to as many diff kinds of musical events as i can, because its important to me to get a feel for what's going on, musically, in all genres. in a way, this sort of narrow-minded musicality is a symptom of the fracturing of music period. i mean, back when, and still so today in some places, and with some djs, you'd hear a mix of everything from one dj. rarely does that happen now, and why?

fyi - farina's here sept 9(yes a tuesday)at century room... not sure how that's really gonna go, as its an odd location, time, and its during film fest, so who knows how that'll roll.

the fact that both these djs are from chicago(originally) brings up another intersting point. i find it really weird that these days so many people associate "chicago" house with funky house. It has never, ever been like that in chicago. Chicago "house" has always been about embracing everything - techno, house, whatever. guess its part of that fracturing thing, at least from some peoples' understanding of things.

anyway i say more variety - there's a lot of good techno tunes, house tunes, dubstep, whatever. so many in fact, that it should be no problem stringing together a dope set of that kind of thing. we need more of that.

Pardon my ignorance but in my world chicago house has always been Funky, groovy, vocal house...if you look at how and when chicago house originated..there was nothing techy, trancy, minimal about it..

Mark Farina has always played a groovy and funky house set...at least the 8 times I have seen him. the same goes for.....Larry Heard..Marshall Jefferson...DJ Sneak..Derrick Carter...Frankie Knuckles....etc..etc..

Roll Calls / Event threads. I just look at which DJs generate excitement in the sound that I'm interested in.

- Check out recorded DJ sets on various forums (here, tribe, mnml.nl, livesets)
- Look at new releases on various websites (decks.de, beatport, boomkat, other forums)
- Friends recommendations
- Looking at track listings from sets and picking it apart to find new artists that catch my interest
- Seeing what other DJs/producers are associated with labels that have other DJs that I know/like on it
- Checking out the upcoming events forum and looking into artists that are coming to town that I've never heard of before
- Generally having an active interest in music instead of simply 'going with whats given to me'
- General willingness to check out stuff that is 'new to me' and not only going to stuff where I know who is playing or what to expect

In reference to this being in Toronto, maybe it is a combination of going out too much, with too many of the same DJ's playing different venues. I agree, understand and respect that there is a lot of talent in TO, but it seems like we see the same names everywhere. No matter how good the DJ is, if it is the same people, you will hear the same sound.

As for my personal tastes, I am just happy the electro phase is over. The techno phase as re-inspired my love for EDM, and allowed me to branch out *a bit*, and allowed me to extend my passion. I was getting a bit bored with electronic for the last few years, but I find myself back on the wagon.
