^^ I don't think that's correct. I think commodities are king in terms of market cap.
Certainly the near doubling of the value of the tsx between 2004 and 2007 wasn't due to financials anyways.

Not in terms of value but in timing. I was in a meeting today actually and the analyst created a graph showing a few recessions. Notably in 91, the financials bottomed out first then started making a recovery earlier then other sectors of the market.

But your right resources have been great over those years. A good resource portfolio could have averaged well over 20% the last 5 years.

^^ at least 20%...maybe even annually.

I watch stocks like Barrick on a daily basis even though I don't own it and in the last week alone it's dropped and then regained 25%. It's easy to be lured into trying to time the market with swings like we're seeing right now.

Ya 20% annually .

Potash will probably recover tomorrow.

Are you doing CFA? I think we discussed this before.

I'm studying for it right this moment (well, right before I opened TA). Level 1. It's a pain. Introduction to the income statement... Good times.

I don't think Potash will recover as easily as you suggest. It's had a good run, but like other commodity stocks I think it was uber inflated. I am starting to think the commodity run is over ..for the near term anyways.

yeah...MER on so many actively managed funds is ridiculous. when they don't even outperform their benchmark, you wonder wtf people are paying for. most would better off with index funds (like TD's e-series) or ETFs.

if someone is young and saving for a down payment on home, for school, etc., or just has a very short time horizon for whatever reason, they probably shouldn't be investing in stocks or mutual funds in the first place. they should be looking to protect their principal with safer vehicles like GICs, high interest savings accounts or Canada Savings Bonds.

I've heard a couple of horror stories about the CFA exams, lol...are they as brutal as they say? I was flipping through sample questions on the institute's site...looks, um, fun :\

^^ Re. CFA - it's just a lot of material. 3 six hour exams over 2.5 years (minimum), very low pass rate, four years industry work experience. Some of the material is difficult, some of it isn't, but the quantity makes it overwhelming.
