Ugh oh, the "I get bored of any one genre after about 30 minutes of listening" crowd is fighting back.

You're misjudging some people there, i'm afraid.

There are practical reasons for which it makes sense to have a DJ mix records, where people want to dance, in clubs etc. But there isn't really any good reason for which the music you listen to at home always must be served in a DJ set. I'm not saying the mixed set is pointless at home, but it is overrated.
But ultimately it's all up to the listener. |
And as a listener I want to know what I can expect when listening to a DJ (till a certain level). When Armin, Ferry, Tiesto or Paul wouldn't play what they play then probably many people would stop listening to them.
I like U2's pre Zooropa work best, but never complained about the change. Just look for something you do like and meets you taste. As for artist albums I bought ten times more compilations than artist albums.
Sometimes I feel I'm the only 34 year old TA over here who still likes current Trance which for me started at the early 90's. I even sometimes wonder if the age of the DJ's has to do with what they play (and many don't like). I also like(d) (Acid)House, Eurodance, (German)Techno, Happy Hardcore, Hardcore and Hard Trance. All genres by which the most successful DJ's have been influenced by, especially the West European ones.
At home I don't listen many DJ sets, because many tracks probably don't meet my taste. At home I play what I really like. I listen to ASOT in order to find some new tracks and don't mind hearing some I don't like that much, because I listen these sets in my car.
I also wonder who over here just listens to Trance and who also dances (or have danced) on it in a club or festival.
I think people who also dance on it are more open minded and also enjoy when another genre is being played. On the other hand, at festivals like Mysteryland you can pick your genre. I enjoy Trance most, but also danced my ass of on the other genres some years ago. Remembering the fun we had doesn't make me shame for even liking Scooter back then.
But indeed ultimately it's all up to the listener, so I guess Armin, Ferry, Tiesto and Paul made the right decisions...... Hyper Hyper....

The only reason that people view today's epic and progressive trance as of lower quality in comparison to 90s epic and progressive trance is simply because the sound is relatively similar and hence they are naturally bored of it (same concepts, ideas etc.)accusing the sound itself for their boredom. Truth is that this is how music is. |
That's a crock of shit. I was bored of the fluff, Anjunabeats, Above & Beyond sound as soon as I heard it (Total Euphoria compilation, released 2001) where as I still hear tracks from the 90s for the first time and love them. There's no nostalgia there because I've never heard the tracks before and I didn't get into trance listening to a mid-90s progressive sound. There's no over-familiarity because I have and I listen to a lot more 90s trance than 00s trance.
I wish people would stop wheeling out these cliched, patronising and generalised explanations of how everyone who has stopped liking new trance has simply become over-saturated with it or has "moved up" or "developed" in tastes. Maybe you followed such a predictable pattern, but don't push words about people's tastes into their mouths because of it.
