+1 to people who said it's just like any religious infomercial or someone on the street telling you they think you need to ensure your salvation. with the vast amount of conflicting religious messages that we're exposed to on a daily basis, no one should complain about the simple message being conveyed here. people need to understand you can be a happy atheist without being a hedonistic bastard

bullshit. i don't know anyone who wasn't taught to believe in a god in their younger years, secular or not... even the most uncultured of cakers i had to live near. even if they weren't exposed to the idea of god, that doesn't make their criticism of religion any less valid. and hell, wouldn't those be the easiest kinds of people to convert?

plus it was the complete opposite for me. i regularly went to church until i got towards the end of high school and decided to stop because i realized i was just lying to myself. i started to consider myself agnostic, and an atheist a couple years later. it wasn't that i never understood my faith from the get-go.. it was that the more i learned about history and the way humans interact with each other the more huge problems i saw in religion.. from all aspects ranging from the actions of institutions themselves, to realizing i didn't need to follow any dogma to live a happy life (and make it happier for those around me) and be at peace with my inevitable death. it was made easier by my parents being open-minded... but some of my good friends who were raised devout muslims had the same revelations around the same time in their life.. and just like me, they aren't afraid to defend or clarify their views even if it means criticizing faith.

Yeah, it's pretty simple... it's one of those things similarly to when they talk about the "spirit" of the law versus the "letter" of the law.

It's saying essentially that your body is not ultimately your own, that it's on lease (for 20th century terminology) and that you must keep it in good working condition to the extent that you have control over that.

Pretty much any forum/blog I've seen this posted on, has sparked some pretty long discussions. Some of it good, some if it not so good. Was busy the other day so haven't had a chance to read this entire thread.

But, if the goal was to spark discussion, I'd say that it has.

I'm not really sure what spiritual/religious group I'd fall into. I wouldn't say that I'm atheist or agnostic, but I'm hesitant to say I believe in god. Not because I don't believe that there is something greater, but because my concept of god isn't really the Christian/Catholic/etc concept of God.

The concept of "God" has some nasty connotations with it that I'm not that particularly fond of and doesn't fit in with my beliefs. To many people died in the name of God, waged wars, killed others, played for power and been used as something to separate, divide and conquer all in the name of God, and frankly that isn't the God that I believe in.

Heh... why is God put on trial for the things that people who misinterpret His word do?

The people that died in the name of God, according to the religion/Bible are the closest to him. Those who kill or otherwise terrorize/antagonize in His name don't really represent Him at all. How hard is that to understand... I was able to understand it fairly easily - I am someone who has attended church less times than I can count on 1 hand, hardly a devout religious believer in any measurable sense of the word.

Do we say the law is at fault when people misinterpret it?

Do we say that all of Canada is at fault when various Canadians misrepresent the country when abroad?

Guilt by association has never been a good thing.
