If you haven't heard of this: the Google Summer of Code is a yearly event where Google will sponsor you to work for an open-source project, doing something useful: fixing bugs, adding features, whatever. You write up a proposal and submit it to Google, who will pass it along to the mentors associated with your chosen project; if they accept it, Google gives you $4500 and 3 months to implement. Perhaps more importantly, though, you'll get a nifty t-shirt.

The requirements: You must be 18+, and be enrolled in some sort of accredited higher educational institute.

Note that they just opened this year's site on Apr. 14, and are not yet accepting applications; you've still got time to decide.

I know many of the other online calendars were and are still phenomenal... and even better in terms of ease of use, etc...

But its the close integration and association to Gmail that makes this so fucking handy beyond belief for me!

Just so easy to add things to it from your email and to switch to it!
I like the Agenda feature, and the custom date period (mine's set to 3 weeks). I'm using this like I wouldn't believe!

No longer even keeping my Outlook up to date. Google Calendar for the future for me.

I cant wait till they set up Holidays to appear on it. I'd also love to see them make it so that when you click on a calendar event/appointment, it'll show more than just the name, and location and the "more details" link. Having it eventually displaying any notes you have entered when you click on the event would be ^5 (avoiding having to click on "more details" first to see what notes you've made).

So much potential IMO. I love it. That's my verdict.

Jem

I have all my calendar "categories" set up now... ex:

General, Birthdays, Holidays, CGA, Tennis, Toronto, Work, etc.

I love it... makes things immediately stand out based on their colour that you've associated w/ that group/category.

Plus makes the calendar appear more lively w/ a multitude of colours (and its nice the colours serve a real function too... and are not just for show!)

The "Description" part of events is so handy! I have so many related thoughts and notes stored in things Ive marked down on my calendar! And I like the function to be able to set up multiple users in your calendar, and the ability to publish it online... (not that Im using that feature... _yet_) and its so easy to decide whuts shared or private depending on what you wish to actually have disclosed

Honestly - such a Google Calendar fan! Its wonderful

I recommend everyone try it

Jem

Google Q1 financial highlights

Google Q1 financial highlights
Posted by Garett Rogers @ 1:19 pm

Here are some of the highlights from the 2006 Earnings Report PDF and press release on Google's website. It looks as though Google has had a great first quarter with revenues up — and in some cases by almost double from a year ago.

quote:
Revenues - Google reported revenues of $2.25 billion for the quarter ended March 31, 2006, representing a 79% increase over first quarter 2005 revenues of $1.26 billion, and a 17% increase over fourth quarter 2005 revenues of $1.92 billion. Google reports its revenues, consistent with GAAP, on a gross basis without deducting traffic acquisition costs, or TAC.

Google Sites Revenues - Google-owned sites generated revenues of $1.30 billion, or 58% of total revenues. This represents a 97% increase over first quarter 2005 revenues of $657 million and an 18% increase over fourth quarter 2005 revenues of $1.10 billion.

Google Network Revenues - Google's partner sites generated revenues, through AdSense programs, of $928 million, or 41% of total revenues. This is a 59% increase over network revenues of $584 million generated in the first quarter of 2005 and a 16% increase over fourth quarter 2005 revenues of $799 million.

International Revenues - Revenues from outside of the United States contributed 42% of total revenues, compared to 38% in the fourth quarter of 2005 and 39% in the first quarter of 2005. Foreign exchange rates had an immaterial impact on sequential international revenue growth. Had foreign exchange rates remained constant from the first quarter of 2005 through the first quarter of 2006, our international revenues would have been $65 million higher.

"Google had an exceptional quarter with strong growth and profitability, from both Google properties and the network," said Eric Schmidt, CEO of Google. "We are driving this growth through investments in our infrastructure and our people, product innovations that attract new users, and relationships with advertisers and partners around the world. The strength of our business model gives us the opportunity to invest in our business, allowing us to maintain and grow our market leadership."

After having recently bought SketchUp, Google has release a free version of SketchUp.

Google SketchUp (free)

Google SketchUp (free) is an easy-to-learn 3D modeling program whose few simple tools enable you to create 3D models of houses, sheds, decks, home additions, woodworking projects – even space ships. You can add details, textures and glass to your models, design with dimensional accuracy, and place your finished models in Google Earth, share them with others by posting them to the 3D Warehouse, or print hard copies. Google SketchUp (free) is a great way to discover if 3D modeling is right for you.

Google SketchUp is free for personal use.

Aside from other uses, you can put your 3d models in Google earth: http://sketchup.google.com/support/...6241&topic=8539

Just announced: Google Trends

www.google.com/trends

Basically you can type in any keyword and see how often people have been searching for it over the past couple of years.

Moreover, if you type in keywords separated by comma, you can see a graph showing relative "performance" to each other. Thus you can compare popularity of different keywords. So the first thing I did was compare Google popularity of Tiesto, Armin van Buuren and Paul van Dyk.

Click here to see the results:

http://www.google.com/trends?q=ties...ate=all&geo=all

Pretty obvious who is the winner

BTW: Notice the spike in Tiesto's popularity ? That was the olympics announcement. Now notice that after that point, the graph is higher than before. It looks like Tiesto really got some long term fame following that Gig.
