I don't think it's stupidity, it's laziness. Not many people seem to have the ability to think intuitively, or to just be able to slow down and actively think their way through things. Everyone wants everything spelled out for them all the time.

You ever try to share a Megaupload link with a friend who doesn't use the internet/computers much? Jesus fucking christ.

My parents are like this. Don't forget that, relative to the previous generation, all of this technology is still pretty new. It still drives me fucking batty and most of the time I refuse to help, but I still understand how difficult it is for these people to wrap their heads around concepts that not only didn't exist, but hadn't even been imagined when they were growing up.

For them, everything that connects one thing to another is just a "wire". Every piece of equipment in any kind of enclosure, and any window or UI element that appears on their computer screen, is a "box". Boxes and wires, that's all they see and that's all they're able to see.

Confusion over satellite and cable isn't exactly stupid, just very ignorant - but we all grew up with this technology and know it intimately, they didn't.
