Anyway thats a 5-10 year plan, and it will happen in Vancouver-because I care so much about the trance scene and I'll make it happen in time. I know right now it's just some words on some internet forum, but to me it is a passion. |
I think I might have multiple personality disorder. Did I post this? I, too feel this same way and would love to bring a Euro-quality club to Vancouver. I also live in White Rock :P But yes, bringing a club to the area needs to not only be a passion, but economically viable, otherwise you are throwing your money down the drain.

opening a club is alot bigger of an undertaking then opening say a restaurant or clothing store.... might be more comparable to trying to get franchise in the NFL or NHL... it's a very expensive buy-in, the current players don't really want an extra face on the scene, and the league (city) tries to extort you before you can open up for business.
I'd love to see a new club open up, but there's a reason alot of the current ones are moving, closing, or suck... alot has to do with city residents and civic regulations severely restricting business to a point of choking parts of it. And in turn with this, alot of venues operate with a mentality that they might not be in business next week, so might not see many renovations, fixes, or the best staffing.

you know, there is a TA who has a similar dream, and he even knows a guy willing to put big money into a project like that, so don't feel alone.
i agree with arpy on supporting the smaller guys. there are several companies in vancouver that put on much smaller events on a regular basis, but because they don't do major dance events, they don't get much recognition. if there was enough support, we'd have regular trance nights, but there isn't. those have been around for 3+ years know of all the attempts to launch a permanent trance night in vancouver. all of them have failed because of inexistent support. so all we are left with right now is a trance night on wednesdays where you get primarily hard trance and very few people attending because of the day of the week.
if any of you want to make a difference, start supporting local DJs and small events. vancouver used to have a fairly good trance scene, which has nearly vanished in the last couple of years all because people want to go to see big DJs and don't care about the little guys.

Don't even bother with Seattle; if you thought Vancouver was bad, Seattle is EVEN WORSE

^I personally thought the show in Vancouver was great given what the promoters have to work with.
I have been to a lot of shows, big shows, small shows, big cities and small cities.
you can not compare apples to oranges. It would not be fair for example for me to compare AVB's set @ Giant NYE paty in LA to Plush AVB show.
Given our small city and limited venues Twisted has done a great job bringing talent and they keep improving their light shows, etc...
they do what they can. They have tried other clubs around town but turned out to disaster (i.e. Atlantis, Aqua, etc...)
Given so many limitations, plush is currently the best club to have these well known main stream DJs.
One thing I would suggest to Twisted is looking into opening their own club in Vancouver (just an idea), which eventually would allow them to even charge lower ticket prices which is personally the only problem I have with Vancouver shows.

Any investment will have risks, and surly opening a club has high risks but twisted bring enough talent to town every month and always sell out. They can also rent out their vacinity to other promotions co. privat parties.
I honestly think with enough research and choosing the right location they would have their initial investment (exp.) covered within a year or two.
Risk and Return go hand in hand, unless you take some risk, you will never see return.

There's always so much talk about opening your own club, add this, add that and VOILA somehow, magically your trance scene gets better? It is not as simple as just opening some big super club for trance or other dance music. There simply isn't that much interest in trance music here as it is compared to the likes of, for example, Holland. The reason why certain trance shows sell out in Vancouver is strictly because of the DJ name itself. Names like Armin and Tiesto sells themselves within weeks and in Tiesto's case, a matter of hours.
I will agree with what was said before. Start supporting your locals and respect them more for what they can do and maybe, just maybe you might have a scene again.

I don't think that anybody is disputing the quality of the show. Armin spun great, glad I got to see him, had a fantastic time. I'm just thinking (as anyone should) that it could have been better. Fact of the matter is that the sound at Plush is shit, and we want a different venue. If you don't voice your opinion, nothing is going to get done, and nobody will know how you feel.
