If you do it and it works for you then thats great and keep doing it but i think people put too much emphasis on it tbh. What really matters imo is the tunes you choose, the way u build a set and clean mixing/eq's in that order. just my view tho so for those that like doing it i wont try to convince you otherwise.

thankyou touched on everything I wanted to say right there as far as I'm concerned, key mixing is NOT essential - there are ways around it..

key mixing starts to come natural after a while I reckon.. in my latest demo, the only thing I planned was what track I was going to open with and, like all of my mixes, I played by ear as I went... turns out a fair few tunes were in key and those that weren't, I did a snap mix out of it and it sounded fine..

I justnever understand where this whole 'neccesity to mix tunes that only match in key' came from... play what you want, when you want and know your tunes so you can deal with the transition in an appropriate manner.. *shrug*

just coz youre not writing the key of your tunes on the sleeve doesn't mean youre not key mixing

I'll also add that for every track you have, there are 6 out of 12 keys you can mix harmonically with (my basic understanding, perhaps there is more if youre tricky). So, all things being equal, that's HALF of your collection. Not as limiting as people try to make it.

Completely agree - most of the best sets in history, especially with trance, were done before this was ever a topic.

Crowds dont talk about whether the mixes were in key the day after, they talk about the farken mad tunes the guy played or the way he built things up.

great mixing can be in key so i am not saying to do it is a bad thing, just that it isn't neccessary to sit there keying the sleeves of ur tunes to do well at djing.

yeah, but i don't play for others, i play for me! which is why i'm probably on the lower end of the "professionalism" scale!!

i play sets that i would cream my pants to, but most other people probably just think "meh, repetitive nonsense". fuck em. if they wanna be so picky they can get up there and do it themselves (which is basically the only thing that inspired me to start learning).
