Okay, so how was Deadmau5 approaching this? From the looks of it, to either promote his own productions or to please his audience base, probably consisting largely of people who more likely than not appreciate him mainly due those productions (or both).

Great- not exactly what comes to mind when I think of interesting/quality DJ'ing, but, hey, I suppose everyone has their own understanding as to what makes a great set. If you find this type of set satisfying for whatever reason, good for you. For me, DJ'ing is about the musical identity of the DJ, and I find it hard to believe that this is encapsulated through a set consisting of their own tracks. It's certainly a good idea to include them, but to get a sense as to what a DJ is really all about, their sources of music, for me, would have to extend far beyond their own production catalogue.

Contrast this EM with the set that Clovis posted, and you'll get an idea as to why I don't hold sets like Deadmau5's EM in very high regard.

Successful productions have been the gateway to a successful DJ career for some time now, which doesn't necessarily mean that they're bad DJ's, as most of these people were likely to have been spinning well before that one hit track gave them their big break.

It seems to be getting out of hand in recent years, though, such that being a successful DJ is having a lot less to do with actually being a good one.
