Canada is the only host nation in history to host an Olympic games and not win a gold medal that same year ... not just once, but TWICE ..
Montreal 1976 (summer)
Calgary 1988 (winter)
at least we hold one record not likely to ever be broken
Going for three in 2010

to me its more then just disappointing...it shows how bad the canadian athletics program is....I don't expect that we should be up there in the medals with China, Russia, USA, etc. but we should be competitive...and right now it doesn't appear we are competitive in most events that we have athletes in.

the over-glorification of american athletes. Well we won't get into that
anyways heres a good story from last night. During the women's team gymnastics competition, the American women lost out to fantastic Chinese team in a great contest. The Chinese were truly brilliant and really put on a show for their home crowd. What I really loved seeing is the comaraderie shown between the American girls at the end of the contest. One of them was obviously upset after falling in one of the rotations (the floor i think) and one of her younger team-mates (the talented Shawn Johnson) consoled her. I thought it was a touching moment captured on television as the older girl smiled and teared up.
These athletes put their life into preparing for the olympics and for it all to go out the window in one 2 minute routine is sad. Thats how it works though and moments like that are especially why I love the world of sports.
The Chinese came up to the Americans after the gold was secure and took a moment to hug and congratulate the 2nd place Americans. Very nice
actually that girl fell on her last TWO routines....floor AND beam, which clearly lost the 1st place and shook her team up to the core. Poor girl has to think about that the rest of her life, while the other girls will have to ponder how they stick everything and still lost it because of one chick. I almost feel bad for her but she messed up on something so silly.
Love the interactions between the teams though. The chinese KNEW that the one girl lost it for the americans, and clearly understood her pain. The coach went directly to the american girl and gave her a hug after it was over.

Its great to see that we have set 17 new Canadian Records in the pool but it also shows just how far behind the rest of the world we are.
Maybe the Canadian Media over hypes the possible success of the athletes. So far I have heard of at least 4-5 events where CBC is saying we have a good shot at a medal and the athletes fail...our world champion 100m freestyler couldn't even make the finals.
meh, you guys have the winter olympics the US clearly doesnt do as well in those (I mean seriously, who REALLY does curling??)
