I don't think you ask for ppl to shell out money for your wedding. Between the gifts and LOTS of money you recieve.. you can almost end up balanced.

I'm with Mel, I probably give more than enough but I don't like hearing that people depend on the guest to give a huge amount of money.
I think he just invites them because his family isn't rude and they end up giving him money

I don't think they depend on it in general, but being that it is customary, they also expect it.

I do it because it's customary but I don't understand why they should expect it. My parents wedding in '03 cost almost 50,000$, which was pretty much all paid for by the time they got married so the money they got as gifts they put away for their future dream house, so I know it's possible to not need the money. I guess when you're younger you depend on it more.

if you don't want to pay for a wedding, go to vegas. otherwise, shut the fuck up and enjoy your day. most of it's supposed to come from the two families, anyway. if you can't scrap up enough for corsages & a ring, you're not in a place to get married.

From the 175 people that came, maybe 5 or 6 i never met before, also my brother (who was the best man) got to fill his table with his friends (table of 12), the rest were known, you know aunts and uncles, cousins, friends and the list gets only bigger really fast.
And you guys forget that the money they gave as a gift is really only borrowed, if they marry (or their children marry) and I'm invited, my gift will only be bigger than what I got from them.

I don't doubt that SOME do depend on it. My sister and her fiancee are, but they are using it for their honeymoon flights, etc.

Of course you expect it in some way, because your parents went to weddings in their families and gave them gifts and what not, its just the same recycled money

You're going to hate Hong Kong...
They have big ass parties for weddings, and instead of giving gifts, guests give money for the bridge and groom.
