I know you're loyal to the venue, and I agree that there is a ton of potential, but you have to realize that a club will not survive in LA without a serious makeover. LA is too fickle an audience to come out to a venue purely for what it used to be, not what it is now. A minority of the 21+ clubbing crowd are hardcore trance heads.

I have been to Circus in the last few months and I haven't been all that impressed. Perhaps it's the music, perhaps it's the sub-par sound, perhaps it's the new DJ booth with the blinding light rig. It is probably a combination of those along with my vivid memories of the club's heyday (2001-2006). These days, it's more like a hastily thrown-together rave in the middle of Hollywood. Many of us are just not into that scene anymore, nor are many of the marquis DJs.

I'd love to see a Circus revival as much as anybody. My first DJ gig ever was in the loft there. Some of the most influencial artists and DJs performed in the main room, those who formed my opinion of EDM and helped me forge my budding DJ career. I had a lot of emotional investment in the venue and I'd like to return to that state sooner rather than later. I just don't see it happening with the current format.

Squashing the stigma with a remodel --> newfound interest from the LA faithful --> foundation to draw A-list performers

+++++++++++++++

This whole debate reminds me of the Ten15 debate years back. They _finally_ did a makeover, but left the base of the main room untouched which to me was the point of the makeover -- all they did were move the bar and add a backwards balcony area, which to me means nothing. That said, they've had good periods and bad periods since then but still haven't been able to maintain a crowd over time...and I think it's because the lack of anything done on the main room as it doesn't have any personality or anything. Best DJ booth EVER still, but beyond that it's still a rather crummy room, especially compared to the rest of the club. It's only lasted as long as it has, IMO, because of Taj. Circus reminds me of the main room at Ten15...or how Ten15 was as a whole before they did anything to the other rooms. People just aren't into that look & feel of a club anymore. It wasn't like that 7-8 years ago, but it just is today.

So I'll say this..Circus needs to dow hat I think Ten15 needs to do. What Avalon did and what Vanguard did.....shut it down for a little while, clean up and overhaul the place, and completely relaunch....maybe even with a new name. Palace --> Avalon and QTopia -- Vanguard. Look what shutting down and doing all that did for those places. I think 1015 in SF should DEF do that and I think Circus should do it as well...try to give the place a new image along with new looks.

Of course it means making no money short-term, but it's a long-term investment. The goal would be for people to take notice of the palce after the relaunch, bring the crowds back, maintain them, and make the money back that and then have higher profits in the future If there's not going to be any long-term investments with the club, just shut it down.

The layout of Circus is great, other than that HUGE room in the back if that's still used. That room's placement is terrible, IMO. Especially when trying to get good acoustics. If someone with a brain took that place and did things right, it could be a top club if not the top club in LA at some point again IMO. The layout of the place is so prime.

One difference between Circus and some of the other clubs mentioned is that it is completely PACKED (we're talking 2,000+ from a bartender that I know there) on Friday and Sunday Latino Gay nights. imo, Circus is doing EDM, especially Trance, fans a favor by taking a hit on Saturday nights...but not all Saturday nights. Throw Rank 1, Martin Roth, Johan Gielen, Eddie Halliwell, and a large number of quality DJ's in there and the place will be packed as well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against a remodel, but they could completely remodel the place for mega bucks and some people still wouldn't like it. Kind of reminds me when I looked for a place to live once and there was this condo that had recently been fully remodeled...with black floors, black walls, black toilets and fixtures. Oh, and gold roman columns painted from floor to ceiling in the living room and bed room. The real estate broker told me that the place was a deal and just needed about $60k in fix-up costs to "remodel the remodel." I told her "no way," that I was lucky to afford a 5% downpayment at that time and looked elsewhere.

Actually, come to think of it, Circus did a remodel maybe a year ago...they put a huge VIP area right in front of the DJ booth (the third one, yes there are three in the main room) that's against the back wall in the room where the coat check is. Everyone complained, since there was only like 3 feet of room to dance in front of the DJ, or you had to dance another 40 feet back behind this huge wall and VIP booths (which were completely empty with bouncers standing on the sides). That VIP area has since been moved to the far end of the main room near the smaller restrooms.

So, yeah, remodel sounds good...but suggestions need to be very specific or we might wind up with gold lame curtains and silver slippers hanging from the ceiling...and any remodel also needs to be kinda universal, so it would appeal clubgoers every night of the week. If I were Circus right now, I'd probably be asking the Friday and Sunday night crowd what they wanted remodeled, since that's where the crowd is. That said, I'm sure there's something that could work for everyone...

Well, I'm not Latino and I'm not gay, so I don't have a clue abotu Friday or Sunday ights, heeh.

That said, unless a club wants to run itself into the ground over time, it flat out has to remodel at some point. Or at least make some enhancements over time that are logical and for the better. Kinda like how Ruby Skye has over time. It's going to be hard to ever change the layout/look of that place, but they have been smart and have upgraded the soud and drastically improved the lighting every year or two...they only add a few lights here and there every time, but they are real good and choosing the fewest lights necessary to get the effect they want.

Anyow, a lack of good investments in clubs is why so few clubs last as long as they do. Circus has been lucky, IMO, but at some point the investment is gonna have to be made.

If someone i LA was smart and had the money, they could just build a new modern club that's gonna be marketed towards the same gay people Circus/Arena markets to over the weekend and I imagine it wouldn't be too hard to take those people away.

This all said, the points you make are valid and good ones...but we as EDM lovers suffer because of it and some people continue to overly support the place.

Oh, and I didn't mean to say it was all Gay, I think Sundays is Bi Latin Men night. Circus is one club that does not discriminate!

Circus is like a Smorgasbord... Always something for everyone! From the look of things, people are still coming and still having fun. They might not all be the same crowd as before but I can say that there are still plenty and I mean PLENTY regulars that continue to come. There are also those that have come back and liked it.
I can also say that lots of new faces have been coming through those doors every Saturday and with that, it adds alittle more flavor & spice to the Smorgasbord I know as CIRCUS.

34yrs and counting. Always a great vibe.

Here's a thought. Anybody remember when Gene shut the doors a couple years ago because he wanted to sell the property? Maybe he still does, which would be a decent reason not to remodel LOL!

Norin and Rad did a great job last night (June 13th) and they are from OC (so they should be easy to get). The energy in the side room was a LOT higher than in the main room around 1am.
