Arguably, trance today does sound almost identical to trance from 10 years ago, just more compressed and with longer breakdowns.

I'd say that modern psytrance and (to a lesser extent) techno has more in common with trance circa '95 than trance from 1999-2009 does.

Yep. Even the first two Tiesto Magik mixes (in '97 and '98) are largely free of big breakdowns.

Yes exactly, and there is where all the "whiners" should be looking for music. Instead of complaining about trance they dont like is popular.

1998+ tracks were usually more unique in both composition and arrangement than they are today, while still being "dance" tracks i really think they sounded much better at home than in a club.

Now the tracks makes more impact in a club, but sounds kinda boring for home listening in my opinion.

I prefer progressive house, psy trance or even techno when im out, but for home listening, i love trance and particulary the one spawning in 1998-2003. The melodies where usually one of a kind, which they arent now at all.

that last statement is manly because back then big riffs were found in most tracks.

these days tho is all about taking the best part from something and using it in many different places in the track.

I don't know whether or not you're referring to me with that, but I've never really had a problem with the music (other than the fact that it's been stagnant for 8 years), just the scene. Attracts too many anti-social types who treat it like a show or just go to get fucked up. House is getting like that too, not quite there yet but I'd give it a few more years to pervade the entire scene.

The real "underground" is techno and breaks now, and predictably, techno is starting to move further into the mainstream as more and more disillusioned clubbers flock there from the trance and house scenes. We've almost come full circle!

Most of the artists covered by the beatportal blog seem to be doing Techno.
