I took it to mean Detroit's musical tastes, not its ideological ones.

i remember now that the earlier jeff mills discussion had to do with whether outer form was separable from inner form. I maintain that there is a relationship, but that the relationship itself can differ, and that this relationship itself is a critical part of genre. (eg is it ironic, cynical, parodical, mythological, etc)

Well, opinion is somewhat divided on this subject, even amongst genre theorists. If you take my prog example, there really is no recurrent outer form except a broad tempo spectrum and the use of a house beat. I guess my question would be: how can you link the compositional expression of African cultural themes to an expressed futurist ethos?

quote:
also - where can i read more about this paradigm of inner/outer form in genre? (sorry, i forget if you posted it earlier) - was it the work of wellek and warren?

That's right, although others have also covered it. Frederick Jameson has his own version called "syntactic" and "semantic", and he has it that they're irreconcilable. I don't remember clearly, but I think Warren and Welleck basically suggested that some kind of synthesis between the two methods would be the future of a working model of genre.

What also needs to be taken into consideration is what I mentioned earlier: that many genres are just convenient groupings of records for the sake of identification and marketing. Personally I'm much less inclined to believe genres are autonomous than you are.
