The best part about this slap in the face from Harper is how he did it. Basically putting this along with tons of other bullshit legislation as part of the budget in order to bypass criticism and due process. Typically this method of passing legislation is there for Prime Ministers to change whatever is needed in order so their proposed budget can be carried out. Eg. if you're budget was to cut how much is spent on fixing roads, maybe you would need legislation to slow down the speed limit to compensate for lower quality pavement (dumb quick example but you get the point). So I would love to hear how the increased penalty for growing pot was needed to fulfill a budget...

On another related note, despite Health Canada officials saying it's safe and no real increase in death rates he also moved MDMA to the same class of drug as coke or heroin (Schedule I from previous Schedule III). Summed up this means you're screwed if you're caught with any amount regardless of how small.

I guess he needs to fill all those new prisons with people somehow. God knows stoners and really really really happy people have been taring apart our society for far too long. I say well done Harper and it's a shame we only have 2.5 more years of his lovely ways.

I agree though, it feels very odd to see the Americans moving in a more liberal position when it comes to soft drugs like marijuana, and Canada cracking down. Such a stupid move by Harper as well, I don't even know why shit like this is on his agenda. I actually think he did quite well guiding Canada through the recession and don't think he's really that bad of a guy, but when you see stuff like this (and the prison increase, criminal record pardon reform, etc), it really just kills any positive legacy he could have had. Problem is the Liberals and NDP don't even have their shit remotely together, so nobody can mount a sufficient challenge right now, they're all fighting amongst themselves internally. Whenever another party gets into office I'm sure we'll start being a somewhat progressive again, and most, if not all of these draconian mandates will be repealed. But still, who knows how long that could take with the current state of affairs...
