John has a point. Without a provider/carrier...how's he gonna have the data to use Skype? Unless he expects to have access to WiFi at all times? What about on a bus? or at the mall?
I use Skype all the time, usually for daytime calls to 1-800 #'s and using my home WiFi. Can't beat FREE!! Signal is super awesome. Only bad thing is when I get a txt msg or real call coming in..it usually disconnects the skype call, even if I hit cancel to the pop up notice.

I just signed up for their $2.95 CDN a month for unlimited calls to Us and Canada phone numbers. I did my first calls to Vancouver, the sound was clear, however there seemed to be a little lag, or it sounded like the call was half-duplex instead of full duplex. I'll test it out some more. I'm heading down to north carolina in the morning, and this is why I needed this, so I don't get charged the 2 bucks a minute rogers charges from calls from the US to Canada.

Just make sure that you're using Skype through Wifi and not Data, because Data Roaming will RAPE YOU. I got hit hard while I was in New York around Halloween.
Also, I think you might be right about Skype and Half / Full Duplex, I use Skype all the time to call the offices in (the real) London and I generally have to wait for the person on the other end to stop talking before I start but again, you can't beat the price.

Its because they are using AWS , rather than the standard UMTS
i know WIND is on AWS.. sorry maybe i didn't phrase my question correctly: what is stopping Apple from making an AWS/UMTS supported iPhone? doesn't the BB Bold 9700 run on both standards?

i dont see apple making a AWS phone since most on the world is transitioning to UMTS and would be a bad investment, there is nothing stoping them , its just that with LTE around the corner i doubt they would cater to just one specific carrier when they could break deals with multiple UMTS/HSPA carriers which equates to more $$ in their pockets and portfolio. Also another factor comes is the standard freq for North america and rest of Asia and Middle east is on UMTS so they rather use a standard frequency.
Also there have been rumors of a CDMA Iphone which i can see possibility of happening since majority of the US/Canada is still blanketed in CDMA and there is a huge market for it they havent captured also Latin America and Central American countrys

interesting article on whether the iPhone might ever operate on T-Mobile (AWS 1700 Mhz) in the US..

After thinking about jumping ship over to Wind, I think I'm gonna stay w/ Rogers for a while.
My Current plan for VP & DP is ultra cheap and it's more then I need. I've never gone over any limits so far and who knows, maybe in the near future Rogers will really counter attack Wind's pricing plans to the general public.
Another concern I have is the 1700/2100 band, only two carriers I know uses it and if I do travel, I would have to dig up another phone for that region.
Things would be diff if I was in the business field, I would be all over Wind right at the get go and the amount of money I save on the airtime would be unreal.

At least there hasn't been any issues with BES...

STill down as of this morning!!
This is the third time that BIS/PIN has been down this year I believe.
Once when BBM 5.0 first was released, however that was only for a few hours. Once last week when BIS was down for a few hours...and now yesterday! It's been down for over 12 hours!!! Thankfully its only PIN that's down and not BIS/BES.
Seriously RIM?
EDIT: Looks like PIN is working for me now. IT just took a while for PIN to start working this morning. But everything seems to be working smoothly now!
