he totaled more saves (84) than he allowed hits (71)
Strikeout-to-hit ratio: 207 whiffs, 71 hits
Gagne faced the minimum number of hitters in nearly half of his 84 saves
Gagne allowed one hit or none in 92 percent of his saves (77 of 84) and gave up zero hits in an amazing 60 percent of them (50 of 84)
Gagne this year:
k's per 9 - 12.50
k/bb ratio - 50/9
batting avg against - .165
walks/hits per inning - 0.83
Mariano this year:
k's per 9 - 7.56
k/bb ratio - 35/14
batting avg against - .205
walks/hits per inning - 1.08
so... if we go by the secondary stats, gagne is better than mo in every category. but not just better, MUCH better. mo did surprise me this year and i thought he was finally becoming mortal. but that isnt the case. however, all those secondary numbers by gagne are what mo USED to do. so i'd say, right now... gagne is the best closer in baseball.
and im not doing this to be ANTI yankee. i mean, of course mo is an awesome closer. i dont deny that. and 2, 3, 4 years ago, he was the best. but gagne has taken over. i mean... who's the best starter in baseball now? its not pedro anymore. right now, it's probably jason schmidt. but 3, 4, 5 years ago, there was NO ONE touching pedro. even you, the die hard yankee fan, can admit that. so what i'm saying is, give credit where credit's due. mo WAS the best. gagne IS the best.
