They were a much stronger party prior to the Martin/Chretian camps fighting it out. They lost some really good people over that... Stephen Dion and Allan Rock come to mind.

But i said when they get caught. Nixon got caught, Martin got caught. But Martin is still in power.

looks like Harper has himself to partially blame for this mess...as I've said, he's not fit to lead the Conservatives:

Toronto Star - May 18/05

quote:
The end began with a shouting match in Conservative Leader Stephen Harper's oak-panelled Parliament Hill office.

Harper hauled in Newmarket-Aurora MP Belinda Stronach to his inner sanctum last Thursday to, sources say, "read her the riot act."

"You'll never have a future in this party — you're too ambitious," he told her.

"If we lose the confidence vote I will hold you personally responsible," Harper screamed, furious, insiders say, that she had expressed support for some elements of the Liberal budget...

So...did the Liberals woo her...or did Harper alienate her by explicitly telling her she'd essentially be nothing more than a backbencher under his leadership? Maybe a bit of both...but irrelevant for the purposes of a budget vote where she'd have likely been supporting the Liberals whether she remained a Conservative, sat as an idependent, or joined the Liberals.

Hindsight is 20/20, but I bet Harper wishes he didn't rip her before a vote...now not only will she be voting with the Liberals on the budget, but now she's joined them...and Harper suffers the political fallout of a high profile MP bolting for the other side.

btw...Wasn't Harper a big proponent of "free votes" and not forcing MPs to stick to the party line?

true colours...

I wonder where this story came from and how credible it is. I suspect this had more to do with her backstabbing ways at trying to wrestle power away from harper. I think the conservatives are better of without her because otherwise in the future there could have been a martin/chretien scenario involving stronach.

A lot of conservatives are actually breathing a sigh of relief at getting rid of her.

perhaps...but they may be breathing that sigh of relief for the next several years as members of the opposition.

Instead of having her "just" potentially embarass them by possibly voting with the Liberals on the budget/vote of confidence...now she'll likely be supporting the Liberals on ALL matters in Parliament.

I think there's no denying that this is a significant loss for the Conservatives.

Being a Liberal supporter, I'm glad to see a shift in the balance of power...but I too don't really think it's terribly cool to jump parties, in most circumstances.

If the next election is about ethics (which is likely will be), then this episode hurts the Lieberals a whole lot more.

Truth is whichever party can control the agenda of the next election will be the one that wins. This is going to be a battle of the spin doctors.

exactly and thats the sad part. People believe the BS instead of the facts which is why we have the political landscape that we do.

This is also why martin is on the south beach diet.

^^^ LOL

now THAT would be a fascinating reseach paper...investigating the # of voters who would support a candidate based upon them being on the same diet. This could really sway the next election down south with so many obese Americans

(on an unrelated note...south beach is a rather sound diet...it's just another variation of the 'no refined sugar, no "bad" carbs' diets that have existed for decades that didn't see all fat as bad...atkins, sugar busters, blah blah)

...and a lot of "conservatives" are also breathing a sigh of relief because it's now clear that Harper has no intention of embracing a more moderate stance on a number of issues. Any remnants of the old PC party are now dead within the CPC and the takeover of the PC party by the Alliance is now complete.
