Well with purely textural ambient stuff..or soundscapes, that can't as easily be compared to 4/4 EDM as some stuff that may be labeled ambient or downtempo, yet it has much more of a beat...like Ulrich Schnauss that I mentioned. And if you look at progressive house and progressive trance...the really atmospheric and melodic kind, you'll find some similarities to ambient music, as sometimes the deeper, progressive stuff is noted as being near-ambient at points and is easily made into an ambient, downtempo or chill-out mix (like with some trance, taking the breakdown and extending it and basically eliminitating the 4/4 beat). Now comparing it to a huge epic or psy track...that's when it gets harder to compare.
