I am tired of always having to fucking bring this story out in these gung-ho bbq bullshit threads.
A friend of mine's Grandfather died in WW2, in Italy. He was an American soldier whose job was to basically Scout the fields alone and report enemy movement so that planes would know where to drop bombs. There's probably a word for it, but I don't know what it is because the job has no doubt been replaced by computers in recent times. Anyways, the guy decides to sleep in a seemingly abandoned farmhouse loft when, in the middle of the night, a band of German Soldiers also happens across the farmhouse and decides it would be a nice place to sleep as well. The American went quite undetected for several hours before finally deciding to radio in his very own location for bombing. The American sacrificed himself in order to protect his far-off homeland from being threatened by the oppressing Nazi menace. He's a hero, in the purest sense of you fucking people's terms and a shining example of what it means to be a patriot.
In reality, the choice of one man deciding to make such a great fucking sacrifice deprived his family of his presence for the rest of their lives. An act of sacrifice took with it several other German men whose families no doubt missed them dearly as well. It was a selfish act, one of bloodlust and the typical proselytization of the self-sacrificing Xtian hegemony we are brought up to live and die so valiantly for. Basically, it's bullshit, fucking all of it. There is nothing noble about getting yourself killed merely out of the sake of collective idealism or whatever other reason frightened children justify to themselves as a worthwhile purpose to serve. I seriously doubt that anyone here is arguing the fact that many, many millions of people have served and died in wars, unjustly or not, or that this is truly a tragic thing. But then for some of you to say that it is glorious, that it is a celebration of the fighting human spirit - don't fucking start with semantics because it's apparent some of you actually believe this - is truly a slap in the face of everyone who has ever died from the misadventure of idealistic nations, uniformed or not.
And then for some of you to become quite disdainful that this is being related to current wars... it's proof that nothing has been gained by the deaths of those whom you celebrate. That fact that man's inhumanity to man has no end is discredit enough to such a holiday of enormous conceit and pompous display of pride unearned by those espousing it, some of you have the audacity to further claim that the very concept of freedom is owed - OWED, as in a DEBT OF FREEDOM - well, that sort of destroys the image, now doesnt it?
