If we're talking about trance as in the literal term then your right.
You can only get a state of trance between 135-155ish BPM... a lot of Psytrance is 160+ (Wheras Goa Trance is 135-150 usually) however I'm sure theres other forms of "Trance" that are called "Trance" that are higher or lower then that margin.
Psytrance is all about going crazy and thinking fast not actually achieving what you'd typically call a state of trance. I fail to see how it's a random collection of sounds though. A lot of psytrance is crap these days but you shouldn't bag everything in the genre for that.

I'm not sure to what type of psytrance you have listened, but 160bpm seems kind of fast to me. Also - what defines trance "as in the literal term"?
