I can field this one. The problem with conpulsory voting is that while you can force people to vote you cannot force them to be informed. Ultimately, those who would normally choose not to vote but do so under threat of punishment will show up and mark a box but they will often be uniformed or at best under informed. The end result is 40% of the population casts a vote at random or based on some idiotic criteria like name recognition, hair colour, race, the asthetics of lawn signs, etc. Personally, I'd just as soon have that 40% stay home and not fuck things up. If you can't be bothered to vote chances are you really shouldn't be given the power to elect a government.... I think Fat Mike said it best, "there's no point for democracy when ignorance is celebrated."
