DJ Dan has been DJing longer than you have been alive and was instrumental, along with Olav Basoski, in the late 90s explosion of disco house and helped pioneer the shuffling, scratchy house sound in the wake of Daft Punk's Homework (re: Needle Damage). This:

is probably one of the most entertaining studio mix sets ever released. And I hate studio mix sets. Go get/buy/download it now. I have my own thoughts on this competition, but quite frankly it's puzzled me for years why DJ Dan wasn't in the top 10 more often. He has the longevity, the history, the studiocraft and the professionalism to deserve to be there more than 90% of anyone else on that list. Know your history: He is a very VERY fun DJ. It seems that there is a stark anti-american bias in what is already a joke of an opinion poll. But more on that later.

...because outside the USA, the majority of people have never even heard of DJ Dan. I'm not talking about the internet geeks on here who seem to know every DJ, their discography and most memorable sets, I'm talking about the mass majority who until last years poll had never heard of him

But why is that?

I partly agree with you, but there's something else at stake here. Generally, North American electronic music fans are very cosmopolitan and cultured, and appreciate music from all genres, races, ethnicities, styles, flavours, and nations. They are really colorblind when they go to the club.

Europeans, on the other hand, have a very narrow and myopic view of electronic music and tend to dismiss or neglect anything that's not from their own dreary little rock.

This very popularity contest, in fact, run by a UK magazine, that found cause to expel non-european DJs under the auspices of ballot stuffing.

Please. Disqualifying DJs for vote tampering in the Top 100 contest is like handing out speeding tickets at the Indy 500.

No and no...the one time I saw DJ Dan live I was waiting to get my money back. Don't care if he has status, longevity or whatever, it was embarassing to see him on the top 10!!!

Yes, because you should always judge a DJ off of one single performance!

What kind of logic is that? Do you DJ? If you did you'd know that even if most of your sets are on point there will always be one set every now and then that goes bad. It's bullshit to write off a DJ based off of one set alone.

Its got nothing to do with him coming from America and not the UK or Europe. As far as I'm aware DJ Dan never Dj's over here in the UK (cant speak for Europe). He doesnt promote himself over here at all. He hasn't had some huge selling album to raise his profile over here so why on earth should any of us be expected to have heard of him? The fact that the rest of Europe has the same reaction makes me assume that he doesnt promote himself anywhere else either other than America
