there are 24 keys in total, 4 of which create a perfect harmony. mixing into the same key, its relative major or minor, and its dominant/subdominant.

seriously, if i could stand not mixing harmonically i would do it. i dont think its fun going through keying all my tracks but i just cant stand the dissonance that occurs MOST OF THE TIME when mixing out of key. it just sounds wrong to me.

yes you can "snap" mix so you dont get melody clashes but i dont want to be doing that all the time.

just because you key your tunes doesnt mean you always have to mix in key. like i said before, if you know 2 tunes work well together that are out of key just because there's letters written on your CD doesnt mean you cant mix them together. but its pretty much impossible to know how every one of your tracks mixes with one another. knowing the key is just a guide.

DJ'ing is so subjective and so up to personal taste and people do everything differently. what works for one person might not work for another, and vice versa. i dont think harmonic mixing is essential because some of my favourtite sets arent mixed harmonically and some of my favourite djs dont mix harmonically (that fag called bateman) but for me personally when im mixing most of the time harmonic mixing just sounds right.

i can count the amount of majors in my (trance) collection on two hands indeed, i treat majors as their relative minor simply because the difference (to me) is so small when mixing.

so, on the wonderful wheel, you have: same key, +1, -1, +4, -3, +7.

yes, there are times when any of those rules might not work, but that's the DJs job to work around.

which is the point i think people keep ignoring. its a guide, which you can break at any point you choose

Well put; even with feedback, your own personal style is what can work best

LOL. "key mixing isn't essential but i do it most of the time anyway".

just coz youre not writing the key of your tunes on the sleeve doesn't mean youre not key mixing

yeah i know! just like those stupid singers that feel the necessity to sing in tune/key! what a waste of time!

mate, misinterpret what I said if you want, I'm just stating that I've never consciously gone into a mix/set with the intention to keymix - over time you should do it naturally for some or most transitions without having to think about it.. at no time am I governed by the 'rules' of HAVING to mix every tune in key..

you are right tho, there are a number of keys that match up with other - it's not like only G minor tunes will match G minor tunes.. having said that, I don't understand the complexities behind music keys - this is just based on what I understand..

and you're comparing singing in key to DJing in key? well done.. that's like comparing sailing a boat to eating a brick.
