Here's the thing. Champaign can only be referred to as such, if it's from the Champaign region in France.
I heard this was the same now with Pilsener beer? That it could only be Pilsener if it was from Pilsen in CZE? |
No. A Pilsener is basically a lager but fermented differently. Lagers up until the early 1800's were top-fermented. Czechs (Bohemians) bottom-fermented our yeasts in cold caves. This cold fermentation along with the use of the finest Czech saaz hops, as well as the very soft water flowing through Plzen, gave the beer its distict flavour that beers worlwide based themselves upon.
I've been to the Plzenský Prazdroj brewery twice, once after the Russians got kicked out, and another 10 years later. It was better the first time before they expanded their restaurant area to accommodate the huge swarms of tourists that decended upon this beer Mecca in the years that followed.

I hear the Czech can drink anyone under the table. But I'm sure the Irish and Germans have something to say about that. |
Most do, as the Czechs are the biggest beer-drinkers per capita in the world. They drink it like pop over there, and yes, even permitted on the job (at least still did the last time I went) I'm an exception, but then again, my brothers weigh over 50lbs more than I do.
