Can someone direct me to a diagram detailing the logistics of the situation?

Is it a pipe that has ruptured or is actually the drilling hole that has been breached?

Where is Captain Planet? He's my hero, he takes pollution down to zero.

If the whole world were to laugh at this; then as a collective whole we are fucking retarded.

Hurricane Seasons is on the way; and Iceland is in for a huge eruption soon

The guy is a dick.

I know he shouldn't annoy me, but he does.

Trying to be badass cause he's a military weatherman/part time show girl for the boys.

Doing his bit for the troops I guess but no one wanted to see his tits.

FUCKING NUKE IT!

Didn't you watch my Rachel Maddow video? If all these techniques failed at 400 ft of water, what makes you think it will work at 5000 ft? All the technology acquired since the last incident was for deeper exploration of oil. None was spent on disaster planning.

The top kill and junk shot?

I really don't care what their past was. It was a stupid idea.

The only way that this is going to get stopped now is a fucking nuke.

radioactive seafood... that sounds tasty. I heard BP is testing out Kevin Costner's centrifuge machines now. No kidding.

Yea cause hydrocarbon laden seafood (also radioactive mind you, there is radioactive elements being released) is so much better for you.

There would be very little radioactive fallout from a under-sea nuclear blast.

BP Says 'Top Kill' Method To Plug Oil Leak Has Failed
by The Associated Press

BP admitted defeat Saturday in its attempt to plug the Gulf of Mexico oil leak by pumping mud into a busted well, but said it's preparing yet another method to fight the spill after a series of failures.

BP PLC Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles said the company determined the "top kill" method had failed after after it spent three days pumping heavy drilling mud into the crippled well 5,000 feet underwater.

"This scares everybody, the fact that we can't make this well stop flowing, the fact that we haven't succeeded so far," Suttles said. "Many of the things we're trying have been done on the surface before, but have never been tried at 5,000 feet."

It was the latest setback for the company casting about for ways to stop the crude from further fouling waters, wildlife and marshland. A 100-ton box placed over the leak failed after ice-like crystals clogged it, while a mile-long tube that sucked more than 900,000 gallons of oil from the gusher was removed to make way for the top kill.

Suttles said BP is already preparing for the next attempt to stop the leak. Under the plan, BP would use robot submarines to cut off the damaged riser from which the oil is leaking, and then try to cap it with a containment valve. Officials say the cutting and capping effort would take at least four days.

"We're confident the job will work but obviously we can't guarantee success," Suttles said of the new plan.

The oil spill began after the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig exploded in April, killing 11 people. It's the worst spill in U.S. history — exceeding even the Exxon Valdez disaster in 1989 off the Alaska coast — dumping between 18 million and 40 million gallons into the Gulf, according to government estimates.

Word that the top-kill had failed hit hard in the fishing community of Venice, La., near where oil first made landfall in large quantities almost two weeks ago.

"Everybody's starting to realize this summer's lost. And our whole lifestyle might be lost," said Michael Ballay, the 59-year-old manager of the Cypress Cove Marina.

BP Chief Executive Tony Hayward made the following statement today:

"The team worked the top kill procedures hard for three days. We pumped more than 30,000 barrels of mud at high pressures through the system. We fired 16 different bridging material shots.

"The scientific brains trust assembled here studied the data right through the process. Together with our counterparts in government, we made the decision that the best way to minimize the flow of oil into the Gulf is to set aside top kill and move immediately to place a containment cap over the leak.

"I was on the Discoverer Enterprise yesterday. It is fully prepared to move the cap into place and begin drawing oil up into the boat. We expect this process to take about 4 days. Based on what we know now, we believe the containment cap is the most effective way to minimize the impact of the oil leak on the Gulf ecosystem and the people of the region. We’ll continue to refine the effort, to create the most stable and effective containment process possible.

"I am disappointed that this operation did not work. The team executed the operation perfectly, and the technology worked without a single hitch. We remain committed to doing everything we can to make this situation right."

Why does every attempt to stop the leak is preceded by 3-7 days of preparation? This shuold be like a basketball free throwing competition: you should not watch your ball sink in before you look for another ball.
