Time for my review all the way from Canada!!! I think I've recovered from my trip finally so here goes nothing. BTW, sorry in advance for the length.
First off, I didn't meet any TAs at all, which sux. But I did realize something, you Brits know how to party and are some of the friendliest people out there, drugged up or not haha Alrite, down to it now.
I arrived at the site at around 2:45PM to receive my VIP passes (wikkid) and wasted no time and headed in. For my first festival ever, I was speechless. The size of all the tents, the midway and the concessions before everyone got there was massive. I took a few pics because I knew in an hour, the place would be utter madness.
4 PM rolled around and I watched my mate AJ Gibson start out GKGG with style. Great set, as usual. Next followed Marco V who started and finished banging hard. Hilights were Cafe Del Mar and Simulated. I walked around during his set for a bit and man, do the festivals fill up fast. By 530, the place was buzzing. John 00 Flemming came on afterwards and started proggy, but quickly escalated into a nice trance assault. Lethal Industry and Cafe Del Mar hit the spot. I left at 7 to go watch Signum (1st time again) and they were awesome. Didn't really know what to expect from Ronald Hagen & Pascal M, but they didn't disappoint, especially opening with Solarcoaster. About an hour into their set, I realized my God was on and ran back to the GK tent to see Tall Paul delivering an amazing set. Bass Generator was sweet and sent the crowd into a frenzy. I needed a break as I had been dancing pretty much non-stop all day and had no substances... so off to the VIP area I went.
The VIP area was fuckin cool... the DJs just sitting there having drinks and relaxing, cool site. I bought a GK flag from the party and had as many DJs as I could (and recognized) sign it... got about 12 autographs. However, I realized that I'm being a bitch and I'm missing Tall Paul so back into the tent I went for him dropping Solar Stone - Seven Cities (V-One Remix)... I almost collapsed right there. Watched the Tiesto entrance and bolted to the Gallery tent for the one and only... DUMONDE!!! This was one of the sets that I knew I had to see. I watched them for about 45 min before I took a walk back to Tiesto to hear In My Memory!!! Then I finally hit the Colours tent as one of my favs, Way Out West, was doing a live PA. Beautiful. I, luckily, didn't miss Intensify and I danced all the way till they dropped that tune. Again, legs almost broke. Stayed for the first 15 of Diggers who was rocking it.
Chill out time in the VIP area again, as I still haven't had any substances and I was starting to tire big time. At 10, I decided to give Oakie another chance to try and show me why people love him so. And, holy god, did he fucking suck again!!! That was the last time I will see Oakenfold because I just hate the pratt. Terrible mixing with half-decent songs. Walked along the grounds just to observe the mayhem that was taking place before i realized that the Tall one was playing again and jetted to the Gallery tent. Great set again. Caught him dropping Solar Stone again and almost dropping me again Then it was time, finally, for one of the DJs that I had to see... FERRY CORSTEN!! Met him in the VIP area earlier and what a nice guy. He played an amazing set with songs like Eon - Pocket Damage, Gouryella - Ligaya and Punk. Now, I gotta tell you lot this, I never knew what goes on at GK when Corsten plays Punk and I was spellbound by what happened... a tentful of people singing along to it. Absolute brilliance. I was right in it as well... too funny. Watched his entire set and stayed for most of Guy Ornadel who rocked me again... how do you start off a set with Seven Cities (Armin Remix) and expect my shoulders to not hurt from having my hands in the air????? sheesh Stayed until the girl at the front had an epileptic seizure. For anyone who wants to know who I am, I was the oriental guy at the front trying to help and keep people back when that happened. To the girl, if you're reading this, I hope you are 100% OK.
Break time which meant midway time. And holy god, were those rides fun??? Chaos and Vegas Spin were awesome. Forgot to mention that by this time, I made up for lost time with the substances and was proper fucked now. Took a nice long break and chilled out by the Babooshka tent where Junior Sanchez was great. By this time, me and my best friend were in a predicament as none of the music going on was really to our liking so we settled in the VIP area until we decided to hear some loud music and off to the GK tent it was.
I'm not a fan of Mauro Picotto since he went to the hard italian techno/hard house thing. But when I'm messed, his stuff was pretty good. Thank god I didn't hear him play Gatex... hate that song. However, after him was a man that I've been dying to hear ever since I discovered what Radio 1 was... JUDGE JULES. I saw him at the End on the thursday before but he played funky house that night and I wanted trance. Man, did he deliver. After this trip, he is my 3rd favorite DJ. What a set! Starts off with Rank 1, plays one of my current favs in The Theme and throws in Darren Tate - The Opera Song... I was about 10 miles about the earth by then. However, it was time to leave to see the DJ that I wanted to see more than everyone at the festival because I knew it would be hard to catch him again... JOHAN GIELEN!!
Walked in to see the end of Kitikonti's set and he was pretty good from what I saw. Gielen took over the decks and took over my body with his trance fury. Ligaya, Twisted and a whole truckload of other great songs that I can't remember just capped off the entire day so brilliantly for me. Too bad no encore as he dashed off right away. Walked back to the GK tent to hear Scot Project's last song. Lots of people were still everywhere and I thought most people would have went home earlier. Ended up meeting everyone in the VIP area and left the party at around 8, ending my epic journey.
Sorry for the length of this message, but I still gotta conclude with a few things.
Things that sucked: Oakenfold, missing all of Armin's set, not hearing Signum play Carte Blanche, not hearing Dumonde play Can U Dig It (if they even did), missing Chris Fortier & Steve Lawler again (4 times each now I've missed them), missing most of Tiesto's and Jules' sets.
Things that rocked: every other DJ that I saw, the setup, the rides, free water refills, merchandise stands, the fit dancers (WOW), hearing Solar Stone 3 times, hearing WARRIOR countless times, VIP area and last of all and most important... you people. I have never partied in Europe before and didn't know what to expect from the originators in the UK. You people were exactly what I've been looking for... trance-loving, up-for-it nutters who were the nicest to me and my friend. People just came up and started conversations and when they found out I was Canadian and not American, it was picture time hahaha. Too sweet. Meeting all you lot out there made the party that much better.
Thanks for listening to my rant and I apologize again for the length of it, but too much to say for my first UK festival. Cheers to everyone and I hope everyone had a great time and was safe. LATER!!!
Terry
