I am using an SMX301 mixer and just I often have trouble when recording mixes onto my computer...the sound never comes out clear enough even when saved at high bitrate. My question, though, is what level should the gain be set at...as in...should it be set so that the decibel level of the track is -2 , 0 , +2 etc ???

0db is the best. -2db is a save option, but the mix might sound weak if you record it at a low level.

Addition to help:

Find a way to record your mixes!

if you can reccord your mixes, you can listen to it afterwards to critique yourself.

if you want to improve your skills, the first thing you will most likely hear is "practice practice practice!" and there isnt an easier way to put it. If you can reccord, improving your skills will be so much easier.

How should one record mixes though?

Like specifically what do I do? I have a computer, a discman, a CD burner, I'd imagine thats what I'd need. But how do I get the music into the computer and all that stuff? :/

Setup.

Ah yes the age old question.

I would like to spend $1500 CAN on 2 turntables and a mixer. I already have headphones. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks again.

Search ebay for used technics 1200's (or 1210's)
A pair will cost you like 600-700$
You now have 800 left. I would suggest getting a Vestax pcv275, and spending the rest on records. You could get a mixer with more gimmicky things, but records would probably be a better use of the money for a starter.

You can always buy an external effects unit, such as the korg kaoss pad 2, or efx500, and hook it up to the mixer later.

I see. Would it be horrible if I kept the budget at 800? Is it too little?

No, that might be just enough for a pair of used techs, and a fairly good new mixer.
