The most I have ever eaten was at an Italian friends home on Christmas....speaking of "puking on the carpet"

2 questions from me, regarding Italians:

1. What's with all the "knick-knacks" ie:little statues, little cups, little spoons with paintings on them, and the little unusable mirrors in really fancy frames.

2. Why do all Italians LOVE to argue about ANYTHING at family gatherings, and then try to bring the non-Italian (me) into the middle of it.

...Please enlighten the non-Italian

Thank You.

Your going to get some different answers for this but here is what i believe:

1) This is really just something that Italians do once they've emmigrated out of Italy....most ppl that come to North america came because they thought the life would be better for their fams.. and once they started making money and not being poor like they were back in the village of the home country... they just started BUYING STUFF.. just stuff... stuff because they could never have it before.. they were like kids in candy stores once they crossed the ocean.. and once the children were raised to see all this STUFF laying around being ' shown off' it just because the lifestyle!

2) This is subject to debate... which most likely would cause i fight haha BUT i believe this is because.. Italian families are so large... you have to SCREAM to get out your two cents so that ppl will hear it.. which causes the rest of the family to scream and make themselves be heard... so really.. its not arguing.. its just talking.. which is why whenever you ask an Italian " Why are you yelling at me??" there is one universal answer:
" i wasn't yelling"

HOPE THIS HELPS!

Nikki

1. I dunno I guess we're a very symbolic people. Mainly I think due to the catholic religion etc.

2. Shit I dunno, I guess this happens with any family Italian or not. I think it's a time when everyone's there and tensions are high, so it's bound to explode...As for bringing the non italian into it, I guess it depends on the family itself. lol.

Very true! at this Christmas gathering, there were children running everywhere, older relatives yelling "WHAT!" to each other, lots of cats, hands flailing in conversations and raised voices.

...and food was EVERYWHERE, on the coffee tables, end tables, on top of the organ (do all Italian households have these?) and on little carts with wheels.

***sound of bi-carb hitting the water in the glass***

Thank you, non-Italian enlightened

One of their treasured possesions (front and center in the "living room") is a picture of JPII touching one of the kids.

I'm pretty sure that one of the brothers or cousins is a priest, the father speaks perfect Latin (now that's a hard language )
