thats ridiculous. music can be over-dramatic and trying way too hard to accomplish something. its music with no sense of subtlety. then theres music on the other side of the spectrum. music thats trying too hard to be subtle. so much so that it comes off as pompous and boring.

how can you tell the difference? I guess you need experience in listening to music and a mature ear for what is quality and what is disposable pap made in 15 mintues time.

So go to someone who has never heard western music before, play 2 different tunes and ask them which one is more dramatic. Or better yet, get somebody to take pieces of music from a culture completely alien to you and have them ask you the same thing.

"experience in listening to music and a mature ear for what is quality" implies a shared culture which doesn't exist across the world's diverse population. You can't insult people just because they aren't part of your culture and don't see things the same way you do.

No one culture is better than another. If you share one with a certain group of people it is no valid reason to belittle the tastes of people who share a different one.

thats because the masses dont care enough to seek out and appreciate quality music. they dont have time for it. most of todays mainstream music is about as disposable as junk food and just as easy to make.

but its not like dance music is supposed to be amazingly composed or mature as..say.. classical. but at least it can have some redeeming qualities and do what its supposed to do. move people. and not under false pretences.

and I didnt insult anyone. I insulted the music itself.

I am telling you guys like them are just a bunch of looser fuctards, for them if I listen to Armin; than I am a fanboy. A fanboy who only listens to Armin, Tiesto, Sasha etc. For them I dont listen to anyone else.

A bunch of lowlifes pretending to have a sophisticated music taste. In reality they tune in to his ASOT more than we normal gym people do; but they will hide it so that they can insult other new people joining in here.

****** wannabe Armin Van Buurens who never got to that stage; so they vent out their frustation in here.

ok, so being a motivated hunter of music necessarily leads people to interpereting sounds in the same ways? Now who is being rediculous.

We need to face the obvious here, we are all part of these niches and each of us want to argue that our niche is better than the other person's. We make up these conventions for what is quality when in reality there is no measure for it other than the cultural interperetation of a sound. Just like in visual art that provokes different people to react differently because their different cultures apply different meanings to the images.

You want an example? Native Americans made quilts with swastikas in them which to them resemble the seasons, I could take you to a museum and show you these red banners with swastikas on them and I imagine you would react to them quite differently than the Native Americans did. Just because you think the banner is a fascist symbol and brings up many painful emotions of the past doesn't mean that the Native Americans are a bunch of evil nazis simply because they made an image which you interperet that way.

In the same sense 2 people can interperet a piece of music differently, one can find it "insulting to their intelligence", the other can find it pleseant, neither are wrong, because sound carries no inherrant meaning, the meaning comes from culture.

I'm starting to feel an urge to smack you. You're just completely moronic. And I don't even give a fuck about whatever the fuck you listen to.

I guess you also deeply believe Tupac is still alive, the man never set foot on the moon and there's an underground civilization below earth.

ok nevermind he just said "it isn't good music" right as I was typing this friggin post, argh.

You gotta think of these things in relative terms, sure armin isn't on clearchanel, but that sound he has is so dominant that it is easily considered as the pop of EDM. I have no problem admitting that I enjoy some of the tunes because they make a good subsititue for top40 pop music, it really isnt that big of a deal to like some pop. I mean it shouldn't be such an insult to desire to be part of a crowd, crowds of people enjoying each other's company in the presence of popular music is fun. So enjoy pop music all you want in spite of the people who bitch about it!

When people say that it is pop, you aren't supposed to feel insulted, you're supposed to say "so what?"

I for one fell in love with the snare rolls and trance structure in 2000/2001, even though most people found it stale by 1999, it was pop, melodies, supersaws, anthems, formulas, but it didnt matter because I could turn on digitally imported all day and just take my mind to another world, fuck what other people think about it.

great post

no. being a motivated hunter of music leads to a deeper knowledge of music and that translates into a broder understanding of music...AND THAT leads to the ability to tell the difference between what is good music and what isnt. of course no one here is the law on whats good and whats not but there is a standard.

I agree with that much, but different hunters of music will still judge what is good based on the way they interperet the sound, and those interperetations are cultural no matter how you slice it. It is feasible that there is a culture out there somewhere that interperets armins tunes as good even after being a motivated music hunter.

The standard for what is good varies from one culture to the next.
