I couldn't care less about the poll, never have, never will. Ishkur said he was puzzled why DJ Dan wasnt in the top 10 more often, I said cause no one has heard of him outside the US, he says because Europeans are narrow minded etc, I'm putting him straight.

DJ Dan actually played at several venues in Europe in the end of 90s and beginning of 00. He played at Sensation 2000 for instance. But yeah, he is not as known as many other american djs.

Music isn't about being a docile twit ready to devour whatever wheel barrel full of bullshit comes out largest and loudest from Black Hole or Vandit, it's about the nooks and crannies, the underculture, the little gems in the back of the record stores, the fly-by-night parties that require checkpoints and infolines, the word-of-mouth and the global reach of the internet to find out what interesting things have been cropping up in other lands.

You and this poll are what's wrong with music. You've thrown your arms in the air and given up, deciding to be a passive sponge, accepting only whatever comes out the asscracks of bloated superclubs, glossy magazines, and bland, commercial uniformity and tasteless corporate idolatry.

Besides, your excuse is hardly acceptable when half the DJs on the roster don't do those things in America, yet we still know of them and listen to them. Why? Because we make the effort to find out what's going on, unlike you lazy oafs. Music should never come to you. You must go to it. Put down the MoS comp, turn off your tele, and head to your local record store. Try to find something by someone NOT on the top 100 list.

Well done Ishkur for missing my point completely. It makes no difference that anybody COULD discover DJ Dan or whoever if they really wanted to by using the internet. The fact is the vast majority of people don't search the internet looking for new DJs/producers. Most people's knowledge of whats out there is accumulated by going out clubbing in their own country, buying music magazines etc...and whats wrong with that?

So there is no reason why anybody should expect the masses to know who DJ Dan is. Many of us know who Christopher Lawrence is. He has a few mix cds to his name that were promoted well over here. He has also appeared at a few big events so his name becomes recognised, word of mouth spreads and many people know who he is. The same cant be said for DJ Dan.

You say that half the roster doesnt do anything in America yet Americans still know who they are and listen to them. Bollocks. Name me some
DJ's on the roster who dont produce (productions can get your name known anywhere even if you've never been there), have never promoted themselves in America and yet the American dance music masses still know and listen to?

If you stopped engineering every conversation you have on this forum into an opportunity to spew forth bombastic soap-box rants about everything, you'd realise that you're missing the point. Highlighting a characteristic is not necessarily supporting or advocating it. We all know that the voters for the DJ Mag poll are symptomatic of mainstream masses everywhere in their behavior, correct? That's why they are suckers for marketing, for hype and for associating popularity with validity in the first place. One of the characteristics of such people is that they don't go out and search for music: they accept what is put in front of them, like the masses always do.

Fact is that DJ Dan is an unknown quantity in mainstream clubbing in Europe, and that's because he doesn't do very much over here. It's fairly obvious that people vote for what they know on this poll, and if they don't know they won't fucking vote. So this poll doesn't prove shit all about American superiority over Europe, or anything like that. It just shows that DJ Dan is marketed to the dullards in America and not in Europe. They're still dullards, there's just less of them.

So fuck off with this trans-Atlantic agenda, because to suggest that Americans are less insular and self-obsessed than any other culture on Earth is just fucking stupidity. If a DJ doesn't market himself in a territory, he isn't going to win a popularity contest in that territory.
