did u guys ever see some bbc special where some guy went to clearwater to do research on Scientology?

the ppl were stalking the guy and found which hotel he was staying at and kind of turned the interview around.

Where I used to work in Fl (coral cables) there was a CoS right infront of my job. Uber creepy. Then close to my dads house was the temple for hare krishnas and my dad knows i've been fascinated with them since I was young hhaha. I think my dad wanted to lose me to a cult

it was nuts! (it's all like a 5 mins driving distance from each other)

Nationalist pride will do just as well. Kamikaze pilots were happy to die for their country without religion being involved. More recently the LTTE, a secular organisation, popularised suicide terrorism before the Islamist groups took it up.

i definitely agree with you re nationalism, but kamikaze pilots were fighting a war and they targeted military assets. they didn't crash their planes into markets or schools or prayer houses. Islamists routinely blow up targets even though they are not embroiled in any meaningful conflict, much less a world war.

I certainly think though that nationalism comes a close second to religion in terms of its rallying might and self-evident righteousness.

yeah Kamikaze was a bad example. But the LTTE has targeted civilians and is (or rather was) a secular terrorist group.

But yeah generally speaking good people try to do good things and bad people try to do bad things.. But only nationalism and religion makes good people justify doing bad things.

I can understand suicide attacks against a genuine threat (i.e the World Trade Centre as retaliation for Afghanistan), but what I cannot understand is thousands of law-abiding, conservative Muslims calling for a man's death because he publishes material that is derogatory to their faith.

Someone said something nasty about you. Forget about it and move on. If every person or group of persons responded with violence each and every time they were criticised, the world would be a very empty place.

you fucking what??

Somehow I don’t think all those bankers, stock marketers, and innumerable other civilian roles posed a significant problem to anyone, outside financial concerns.

edit: and what do you mean by "retaliation for afghanistan" ?

Ah, fuck, I'm an ignoramus. Afghanistan's invasion was in response to 9/11, not the other way around.

I don't have time to discuss this now, but I shall return some time in the next few days.

Perhaps he meant 'in retaliation to America's rather aggressive foreign policy?

I would hazard to guess that most Islamists would strongly disagree with you on this point. Whether or not we see "any meaningful conflict" is immaterial; they do.

I'd guess anyone willing to blow themselves up for anything would see it themselves as a "meaningful conflict", so I don't know how this argument holds up either way.
