To all: I don't think we'll get more than 30 people on the list, and remember, there are usually a bunch that don't show up.
It's honestly worse to be under than over, within reasonable parameters. If you plan for 40 people and 20 come, you look like tools. If you plan for 20 and 30 come, most restaurants will try to accommodate you, and even if they can't, you can usually squeeze a few extra chairs in.
One year there was a WMC meet-up in Miami ('05 or '06, I forget), they made reservations for I think a hundred people and maybe 30 showed up, several of whom showed up really late. They were really pissed off and actually tried to charge us for the full reservation. I'm still not sure exactly how or if that was settled.
I realize it's a bit of a crap shoot, and it's possible that every single person on this list will come, but I doubt it. We're probably going to lose a few immediately after picking the venue (and they may or may not inform us), because any venue we pick is going to be far out of someone's way.
'Course I still agree that we should be calling them and finding out what they can handle, but do NOT make reservations for 30 people when we only have 20 confirmed.
