Because it's an interesting discussion. If you actually consider films a worthwhile medium and as deep and multi-faceted as you're describing The Watchmen then it deserves a proper discussion, rather than just stupid COR "Yeah it rocks, man"/"Yeah, it sucks, man".

It's possible to argue strongly about something without simply getting angry. It's the people who just watch stupid Hollywood explosion flicks who don't argue about them afterwards, because they've never put any thought in and never will do.

At 2hours and 40minutes I felt the movie was too short. It felt like a Cole's note version of the source, where alot of scenes were trimmed to make sure the basic plot points were covered.

Alot of cut stuff really fleshed out the character's development, something that is rightfully criticized by viewers who havn't read the book. eg. Hollis Mason's death was never included.. why the fuck would you include him in the beginning? Also, the Minutemen's origin was summarized in a 2min credit intros.. in the book there are actual excperts for Hollis Mason's book, which is only briefly flashed onscreen in the movie.

As for Snyder, I thought he was perfect for the action scenes, as he brought style to the characters.

Overall a somewhat satisfying movie, I'm sure i will pick up the DVD to watch the extra 30minutes that will be included in the Director's cut.

4/5 stars

It looks like this film is going to fit into the "No Country for Old Men" category. Depending on what you want out of the movie, some people are going to love it and some people hate it. If you went in thinking it was going to be one thing, only to find out it's something completely different, you're rightfully going to be disappointed.

Obviously, the people who have read the graphic novel (myself included) are going to be biased because we come into it liking the material. Like I said before, I think there are definitely things you're not going to get from the movie that you get from the comic, but overall it's very faithful to the original. I already knew many of the points that the movie was trying to make, so I'm sure that helped me to like it. I did go with two other people, neither of whom have read the novel and they both enjoyed it very much...so you don't have to be a previous Watchmen fan to like it.

If you didn't like it, fine. I still think you should read the novel. It's great in its own right and might give a different perspective on the film. I don't think you need to read the novel first, or should have to in order to enjoy the movie, but I'll admit it does help.

Off topic, but any of you ever read Maus (I or II)? That, along with V for Vendetta and Sandman were the first "adult" comics that I read growing up and I think it's still my favorite. I hope to god they never make it into a movie...just wondering if anyone else has heard of it.

Not that I think all the music in the movie was great, but you might want to look at the meaning behind "99 Luftballons." It might give it a little more context for being used in the movie...
