You're espousing that people ought to not buy drugs that originated from South America.

But...

1. Nobody knows where their drugs come from. Nobody asks, because frankly, nobody fucking wants to know. In fact, the very notion of knowing their origin is why most everyone questions what you really know about the matter and thinks your proposition is extremely naive.

Can you imagine asking? Do it. Pretend you're buying cocaine from someone who is not your friend. What would you say? I really want to hear this.

2. Even if someone personally abstained from purchasing a substance because they think it will cut down on crime (haaa), what happens? The product goes away, right? The demand dissipates because of your personal objections. Everyone stops buying and selling because some cop got beheaded 10,000 miles away. Drug dealers just throw that shit away. You're a fucking cartoon if you believe this.

Drugs aren't like grocery store milk. There are no 'unsold drugs'. There are only drugs that someone hasn't paid to use yet.

4. Decriminalization of substances is the only way to change anything. I know we both agree on this, but this does not happen overnight, or even overdecade. Blaming people who purchase drugs (and nobody buys drugs FROM cartels, yo) *is* shaming them for their behaviour, so you're going to have to accept that people accuse you right back for being anti-drug and anti-user. I know you think that you save face by saying that you have no problem with people who only buy locally grown/manufactured or something, but that's simply not the climate that an overwhelming majority of illegal drug users can brook, casual or otherwise. For starters, the current penalties greatly delineate between recreational users and intentional distributors. If you get caught making drugs, you are absolutely fucked. Fucked to the point where you could probably stomach the loss of some brown people you never knew in the first place rather than rot in prison, yourself. It's not a difficult decision for people to make.

As far as i agree with Lira, i think the problem is much deeper than just people buying drugs. The problem lies on a very basic and at the same time, the most important value of a nation: Education. There are thousands of hundreds stories like this here in Brazil:

Poor boy, living in some favela, don't have a good education because he can't pay for a private school and his only alternative are the public schools. Public schools here in Brazil are -most of them- utterly shit, without any kind of basic structure. Therefore, the kid won't have a chance of a good job. Wich means he will be poor for the rest of his life. One day, the poor kid looking for a job starts to see one of his friends with a new watch and new shoes, so he asks: "Whoa, dude! Pretty cool! Where did you get these Nike shoes?", his friend: "I'm one the aviãozinhos (like a messenger) of the traffic boss here! He is treating me very well! He told me he needs another aviãozinho. Could be you, if you want. He will also give me a gun and teach me how to shoot! How about that, hun?"

And there you go, another good guy lost to the traffic because he simply has no chance to succeed in life. Another criminal, murderer, drug dealer was born. Like every single day, just because our politicians are fucking corrupts assholes and don't invest in Education.

Crap education + corrupted politicians + people buying drugs = uncontrollable situation.

I believe the same thing is happening in Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Colombia, Guatemala.....there's no education, politicians don't give a crap, no quality of life, you have no alternatives...Now you will say: "Of course there's another alternative: sports!". Again, you will end at the Education problem. Sports must be introduced in schools, specially public schools. Well, already told you how public schools are.

As a former heroin addict thanks for wisĥing me dead. To bad it doesn't work that way though. Big monied people smuggle drugs and don't give a shit for you or me. They're the people who lobby hard for prohibition so blaming addicts isn't solving one fucking thing except making room for new addicts and poverty is here too. I'm writing this from a homeless shelter in Ohio where 65 people every night are turned out to the cold because we're at maximum capacity. You want someone to blame? Blame the.people who lobby governments to perpetuate this biggest crime of history.

But I'm not saying that. If I were to mention prostitution, it would be something like "please refrain from paying for sex with women forced into prostitution by coercive means", such as foreign women who are smuggled into an unknown country where they can't easily escape (although this can happen in their own country as well).
